More than 200,000 people were infected in the first seven weeks of 2013 compared to 70,000 in the same period last year, official figures suggest.

Massive Increases in Dengue Fever cases In Brazil
There has been a massive uptick in the number of dengue fever cases in Brazil during the first two months of 2013. So far 2000,000 people are known to have been infected and 33 people have died. Dengue is spread by the Aedes egypti mosquito which have recently been reported as exhibiting resistance to DEET.
According to The World Health Organization:
- Causes a flu-like illness, occasionally lethal
- Leading cause of serious illness and death among children in some Asian and Latin American countries
- No specific treatment, but early detection, medical care reduce fatality rates to below 1%
- Found in tropical and sub-tropical climates, mostly urban and semi-urban areas
- Global incidence has grown dramatically
- About half of the world’s population is now at risk
