Man Gets Arrested After Slugging Convicted Sex Offender During Sentencing Hearing

People are donating money to a GoFundMe page to help an Oregon man after his arrest for punching a convicted sex offender during a sentencing hearing Wednesday.

The GoFundMe page raised $2,645 as of Thursday after Kevin Patrick Smith allegedly punched former youth pastor Donald Courtney Biggs at the U.S. District Court in Medford, Oregon, according to Fox News. Biggs pleaded guilty in February to secretly filming a juvenile walking out of a shower in March 2013.

Smith allegedly ran across the courtroom to punch Biggs after the convicted sex offender’s public defender Terry Kolkey was speaking, the Mail Tribune of Medford reported. The attack left Biggs laying in the fetal position on the floor.

Smith was then arrested with charges including obstructing governmental or judicial administration and fourth-degree assault. He was held at the Jackson County Jail on a $12,500 bail. (RELATED: Father Of Abused Girls Tries To Tackle Larry Nassar)

Smith’s friend Jacob Elkin started the GoFundMe page Wednesday to raise money for legal fees. Elkin referred to Smith as a “heroic figure” and created the goal to raise $5,000 for the attacker’s release.

“Long story short Kevin (father of two of the victims) did what every person in that room wanted to. He flew like the man of steel himself and punched Donny square in the face and continued to beat him until police pulled the two apart. In all seriousness Kevin has brought a little piece justice and helped all these victims feel better,” the GoFundMe organizer wrote.

Biggs’s sentencing was postponed following the attack and he was instead rushed to the hospital. The convicted sex offender can receive almost up to 16 years in jail.
