Mainstream Media Asks: Should Police Shoot at Moving Cars?

police killing

With so many unarmed citizens, especially teens lately, being shot and killed by officers while the people are in their vehicles, local 10 news in Tampa is now asking “Should Police Shoot at Moving Cars?”

For the record, it’s a pathetic day in society where that’s a question our agenda-driven, bought-and-paid-for media is asking.

Denver recently changed it’s policy, prohibiting officers from firing upon a vehicle unless the person is the vehicle is firing upon them. Indianapolis has changed its rule to make it less restrictive, stating that police may fire upon cars if it is,  “reasonably perceived that the vehicle is being used as a weapon against the officer or others.”

Two quick questions, though.

First: Can’t the cops just, in most cases, get out of the way?

Many people argue that it isn’t always possible and the officers have to fire to save their own lives (regardless of the fact that in many recent cases of unarmed people being shot by the cops while in cars (Sam DuBose, Zachary HammondJessica Hernandez) the officers doing the shooting were not in any danger of being run over at all).

Okay, let’s say for the sake of argument the police can’t, for whatever reason, step or jump to the side out of the way of the moving car (and aren’t just firing on a suspect getting away).

Then Second: Wouldn’t shooting the driver cause the car to potentially go out of control, thus likely causing the car in many cases to still hit the cops who would have to be so close to it they cannot, for whatever reason, get out of the way of danger at the time? From the story:

“There’s a notion in the world of policing called ‘officer-created jeopardy,’ and that’s where the officer’s actions place him or her at risk,” he said. “They’re forced to protect themselves by shooting somebody, whereas if they just didn’t stand in front of the car, they wouldn’t have to shoot at the moving car because now they’re not going to run them over.”

So “officer-created jeopardy” automatically justifies use of deadly force?

Great.

And the slave training continues…
