M6 Flare Brings 2013 To A Close

AR 1936 brought 2013 to an explosive end by popping out an M6 flare a couple of hours before midnight UT. A possible coronal mass ejection was hurled into space and will arrive in the next few days. Although the sunspot is Earth facing it won’t be a direct hit and we will most likely receive a glancing blow.

The next day or two however, will see AR 1936 moving into it’s optimum position on the western flank of the Sun, and this means any CME would score a direct hit.

NOAA is concerned enough to have upped the guesstimate to a 40% chance of another M-class and a 10% chance of an X-class flare occurring over the next 24 hours.

Both AR 1934 and AR 1936 have the energy required to produce X-class flares and NASA are keeping a close eye on both.

Todays sunspot number is 136, and the solar wind blowing from the Earth-facing coronal hole is still on track to reach us by 3-4th January.
