Liberal Mayors In Major US Cities Refuse To Cooperate With ICE As Roundups Of Illegal Aliens Begin

Monday, Trump announced via Twitter that ICE would be “removing the millions of illegal aliens who have illicitly found their way into the US.” Whether he can deliver on those numbers is yet to be seen. However, liberal mayors of major US cities are giving warning that they will do all they can to obstruct ICE as they go about their jobs. Frankly, that should get each of those mayors arrested. ICE should expect no cooperation from these mayors but that should not stop them either.

A number of high-profile Democratic mayors are speaking up over this and trying to talk tough. They have either condemned the impending arrests or have said they won’t allow local resources to be used to assist the federal agents. In other words, they are violating federal law. This initial operation is slated to be carried out in ten cities and will target 2,040 families. This will include Chicago, Baltimore, New York, Houston, Los Angeles, and Miami.

“Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot said in a statement that the city has taken steps to support immigrants families, and that ICE agents would get no assistance from the city.

“I reiterated that CPD will not cooperate with or facilitate any ICE enforcement,” said the first-term mayor. “I have directed – and Superintendent [Eddie] Johnson has confirmed – that CPD has terminated ICE’s access to CPD’s databases related to federal immigration enforcement activities.”

“In a statement Friday night, Washington D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser said her city “remains a proud sanctuary city, and we are committed to protecting the rights of all our immigrant families in the face of these disturbing threats.”

She said police officers will never inquire about someone’s immigration status.

“Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti also reaffirmed that the city and local law enforcement wouldn’t participate in or support the operation.

“Los Angeles will always stand with our immigrant brothers and sisters, and our law enforcement officers will never participate in these actions,” Garcetti said in a statement. “No Angeleno should ever have to fear being snatched from their home or separated from their loved ones — and we are doing everything we can to provide immigrant families with the information and support they need.”

“California’s Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom, in a similar vein, called the impending removals “cruel” and “misdirected,” adding that it creates “unnecessary fear and anxiety.”

“I want Californians to know they have legal rights and protections, regardless of their immigration status,” said Newsom. “California is a place of refuge – that includes our schools, our courts, and our hospitals and clinics. We hold certain institutions sacred and people should continue to access programs and services they need.”

“Immigrant advocates are warning families about the planned arrests and what resources are available to them.

“The Office of Immigrant Affairs in New York tweeted a link Friday advising immigrants of their rights in light of Trump’s directive.

“Likewise, the San Francisco-based National Immigration Law Center is urging undocumented immigrants to know their rights. The advocacy group said “targeting innocent immigrant families with secret raids that are designed to inflict as much fear and pain as possible.”

“Houston Police Chief Art Acevedo the arrests could impede law enforcement efforts in the future.

“It instills fear,” Acevedo said. “We rely on the cooperation of that population to keep all Americans safe, all residents safe, and all members of society safe. … When you say you’re going to go arrest millions of people, that has a chilling effect on the cooperation.”‘

The President should understand that not only are these threats cruel and antithetical to our American values, they are actually making our communities less safe by sending more residents into hiding, cut off from resources, support, and opportunity.

In response to Trump’s announcement, dozens of local and state Democrat officials rushed to their microphones to issue statements in defense of illegal aliens. Included among them were New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo and New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio.

“We will fight back at every turn to protect our immigrant families,” Cuomo reportedly vowed in a defiant statement. “New York will continue to be the beacon of inclusion and diversity that the nation and the world looks to.”

“New Yorkers won’t be divided by a sick plot to tear families apart and force immigrants into the shadows,” De Blasio blasted in a tweet. “We KNOW our city is stronger, safer and more prosperous than ever BECAUSE of our immigrant communities.”

Acting head of ICE Mark Morgan, a former head of US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) under President Obama, echoed Trump’s sentiments in a Wednesday statement.

“If you’re here illegally, then you should be removed,” he reportedly said. “And in this case, that includes families.”

Morgan has long been a supporter of Trump’s border security plan.

The shrieking and wailing from the left has already begun over this. The roundups will consist of predawn raids in these cities and it is being referred to by ICE as a “family op.” This was not supposed to be leaked and I hope they find the officials who did so and not only fire them but prosecute them. It should be noted that these illegal alien families have received deportation orders already so this should not come as a nasty surprise to them.

ICE spokesperson Carol Danko declined to discuss the operation, saying only that “as a law enforcement agency, ICE’s mission is to uphold the rule of law; operations targeting violators of immigration laws are not only standard practice but within the statutory authority prescribed by Congress.” This is only the first salvo in the effort to deport millions who are breaking our laws and should not be here.
