Letter to Boehner: “You may possess ‘guilty knowledge'” About Benghazi Attacks

Speaker of the House John Boehner has been resisting calls for an independent investigative committee to get to the truth about Benghazi, despite nearly 80% of House Republicans supporting the move.

Now, family members of the Benghazi attack victims and 70 others – including retired generals – have signed a letter to Boehner to demand that he form a select committee (much like the one that investigated Watergate) to investigate the Obama administration’s handling of the attack.

The letter renews questions over what Boehner knows about the covert operations in Libya, and whether a select committee would discover politically damaging details.

In a January 2013 interview with Laura Ingraham, Boehner was asked about weapons transfers in Benghazi. Boehner replied, “I’m somewhat familiar with the chatter about this and the fact that these arms were moving towards Turkey, but most of what I know about this came from a classified source, and really can’t elaborate on it.”

Among the concerns raised in the letter are those of Boehner’s unresponsiveness and what he is trying to hide:

“Some analysts believe your inaction and passivity towards getting to the truth concerning Benghazi is because you were briefed on the intelligence and special operations activities in Libya.

You may possess ‘guilty knowledge.’ We recall how then-Speaker Nancy Pelosi developed a form of ‘amnesia’ concerning a documented briefing she received on so-called ‘enhanced interrogation techniques’ – later termed ‘torture’ for political purposes.  Are you in the same position as your predecessor? Are you dodging a legitimate, thorough, coordinated investigation of Benghazi because it will damage your political position as Speaker?” (source)

The letter also addresses the FOIA request that was filed:

“You should be embarrassed that members of Congress, and your own party, are forced to file Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests with Obama administration agencies to get basic information about the Benghazi issue. What a sad and pathetic statement about the operations of House standing committees looking into this tragedy that FOIA has become the last resort of even Republican members seeking the truth.

Are you concerned that the scattershot and untimely efforts of the various committees may actually be doing more harm than good at documenting facts? These are all examples of Republican leadership failures. How are you accountable?”

Republican Rep. Frank Wolf was the first to propose the creation of a select committee to investigate Benghazi. In October 2013, the State Department wrote him a letter that provided details about the department’s efforts to round up weapons in Libya – and referred any further questions to the CIA:

“While we endeavor to address your questions regarding this assistance, we respectfully refer you to the Central Intelligence Agency for any questions regarding its activities.”

Wolf said the White House should explain the CIA program and why two separate weapons collection programs were needed.

He told Fox News:

“The New York Times in its recent article confirmed that the CIA base in Benghazi was ‘buying up weapons’ from Libyan militias and terrorist groups.  Why was the CIA running a parallel weapons collection program from the State Department’s well-publicized $40 million program to collect and secure Libyan weapons.

In light of reports that during the same time period the CIA was ramping up its support and weapons transfers to Syrian rebels, the White House and CIA have an obligation to explain why it was running a separate, covert weapons collection program and where those weapons ended up.”

Wolf referenced a new book by former Defense Secretary Bob Gates that reveals how the Obama administration is the most controlling since Nixon and Kissinger:

“His (Mr. Obama’s) White House was by far the most centralized and controlling in national security of any I had seen since Richard Nixon and Henry Kissinger ruled the roost. Gates’ assessment makes clear that the White House needs to answer the role it played in authorizing and overseeing the CIA activities in Benghazi and any transfer of collected weapons.”

With witnesses disappearing, the profusion of mainstream media lies and propaganda, the suppression of access to the 30 survivors of the attack, and Obama’s reprehensible behavior on the night of the attack, will the truth about the Benghazi attack ever be revealed?
