Latest Emerson poll shows Iowa voters don’t consider impeachment the ‘most important’ issue

President Trump appears to be holding his own in Iowa, where voters are dismissing impeachment as a major issue and the two top Democrats are losing to him in an election matchup.

The latest survey from Emerson Polling found that just 7% consider impeachment the “most important” issue. In order, they listed the economy, at 33%, healthcare, at 19%, and social issues at 10%.

Even among Democrats, impeachment doesn’t push through, with the top issue being healthcare, at 25%, the economy, at 17%, and the environment, at 14%.

“The Democrats have some work to do in Iowa convincing voters that impeachment is a top priority of Congress; 67% of Democrats in Iowa support impeaching the president, but only 10% identify it as the most important issue in deciding their vote for president,” Spencer Kimball, director of Emerson Polling.

The survey showed that former Vice President Joe Biden has held strong at 23% among Democrat voters. He is even with Sen. Elizabeth Warren, who has risen with the support of those who once backed Sen. Bernie Sanders, now fourth in the race at 13%.

The surging South Bend, Indiana, Mayor Pete Buttigieg is third at 16%, said Emerson.

But Trump does not appear in trouble. In head-to-head match-ups, only Sanders beats him, and by just 2 points.

Researchers surveyed 888 registered voters, including 317 Democratic caucusgoers, from Oct. 13-16. The Democratic caucusgoer responses have a margin of error of plus or minus 5.5. percentage points.
