The sunspot count is a low 39, but that doesn’t mean all is quiet. In the late hours on September 29th, a large filament erupted on the Sun’s surface hurling a CME into space. You can see a picture here.

Unusually there is no word at this point which sunspot erupted. None of the spots are squarely facing Earth, but the planets magnetic field could well be hit by a glancing blow as the CME passes our point in space.

Sunspot AR1850 does have the energy to throw off M class flares but NOAA estimates the chances of this at just o.1% over the next 24 hours.
