Killer Bees in Texas? People Attacked and Livestock Killed by Vicious Swarm

A Texas couple out for a nice afternoon with their horses ended up living through what must have seemed like the plot of a horror movie.  They were attacked by a swarm of bees and were stung more than 250 times between them. The miniature horses they were with were stung so many times they died.

Kirsten Beauregard of Pantego Texas was exercising her horses when a ‘dark cloud’ engulfed her and the animal. She jumped into a pool to escape the onslaught and the horse followed. She said:

“It got all dark, like it was night time, there were so many bees. We were trying to stand up in the water but every time we stuck our heads out for air, they would cover us and start stinging us. We were trying to breathe and they were stinging us in the face and in the nose.” (source)

She eventually escaped and ran into a building, where she watched as the bees continued to try and get at her, crashing into the windows.

The two horses couldn’t escape, however. One died at the scene and the other died a few hours later at an animal clinic.

The bees are to be tested to see which type of bee they are. Hybrid bees, which are a cross with Western and African honeybees, are often referred to as ‘killer bees’ and are known for their aggressive behavior and relentless pursuit of anyone who disturbs them.
