Kevin McAleenan named as new acting Homeland Security chief

President Trump elevated Kevin McAleenan, commissioner of U.S. Customs and Border Protection, to acting secretary of homeland security following Kirstjen Nielsen’s abrupt resignation Sunday evening. Commissioner Kevin McAleenan is a veteran border official, according to The Associated Press.

DHS Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen reportedly met with President Donald Trump around 5 p.m. Eastern time Sunday and told him she would be resigning from the agency.

McAleenan joined CBP agency in 2001 and served under both Democratic and Republican administrations. Before joining the Trump administration in January 2017 as the agency’s acting commissioner, he served as deputy commissioner under President Obama.

Trump said in a tweet he has “confidence that Kevin will do a great job!”

McAleenan received a Presidential Rank Award in 2015, which is the highest civil service prize in the U.S.
