Japan Scrambles Jets Over Airspace Violation

Tokyo protests to Moscow over airspace violation

Tokyo has lodged a protest to Russia and scrambled two fighter jets to intercept Russian military planes that it says entered its airspace. Russia denies emphatically that the incident happened. A Russian military spokesman said that Russian aviation of the Pacific military had been in the area on scheduled flights and that no airspace violation took place. Roman Martov told the press:

“Naval aviation flights by the Pacific Fleet in the area are conducted regularly in strict accordance with international regulations of using the airspace, without violation of other countries ‘borders'”

The Japanese Defence Ministry insist the violation took place just of the northern Japanese island of Hokkaido.
