Is That a Colostomy Bag in Your Pants or Are You Happy to See Me?

A one block stroll turned into a nightmare for a young Miami man suffering from developmental delays.

22 year old Gilberto Powell, standing an imposing 5 feet tall, was walking home when he was stopped by Miami-Dade police officers because of a “bulge in his pants”. The noble officers attempted to pat him down. Powell, who suffers from Down’s Syndrome,  became frightened and tried to run home, so the officers had absolutely no choice but to defend themselves against the slightly-built “offender”. They struck him in the face, repeatedly. “With his whole hand,” said Powell.

The photo above shows how the MDPD deals with those who attempt to “resist”.

The threatening bulge in Powell’s pants? Nope, it wasn’t a firearm. It was his colostomy bag.

When the terrified young man was returned to the arms of his mother, she was outraged. She asked the officer, ““I said, ‘Didn’t you know he was a Down Syndrome kid?’ And he said, ‘No, I’m not a doctor. I don’t know.’ And I said, ‘Well, you can see it in his face that he is a Down Syndrome kid.’”
