Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) is on board with Sen. Bernie Sanders’ (I-VT) proposal to erase all student loan debt, because she has not paid off her student loans either, she said Monday.
While making remarks in support of Sanders’ sweeping bill to cancel $1.6 trillion in student loan debt, Ocasio-Cortez discussed her “personal stake” in the fight. She wants to make the bill a reality, in part, because she has outstanding student loans.
“I will be completely honest. I will disclose my personal stake in this fight because I have student loans too,” she said Monday. “And I think it’s so funny. A year ago, I was waiting tables in a restaurant.”
“It was literally easier for me to become the youngest woman in American history elected to Congress than it is to pay off my student loan debt,” she continued.
Rep. Dan Crenshaw (R) Texas, on the other hand, believes that canceling all student debt is “immoral”. In a tweet Tuesday morning he succinctly laid out his reasons for why saying that the people who have “the advantage of obtaining a degree should not have their debt paid off by hardworking taxpayers” the majority of whom do not have a degree themselves or have already paid off their own loans without assistance.
When you say #cancelstudentdebt, you’re saying a minority of people who had the advantage of obtaining a degree should have their debt paid off by hardworking taxpayers, 2/3 of whom don’t have degrees themselves, or already paid their own student debt off.
This is immoral.

Other’s like Entrepreneur and Small Business Advocate Carol Roth said #cancelstudentdebt is “just an attempt to buy votes, and it isn’t ok”.
Why is the debt of one person different than the debt of another?
Why should someone who made sacrifices to pay off their own student loans or decided to forgo college be responsible for someone who didn't?
This #CancelStudentDebt is attempt to buy votes and it isn't ok.
