No matter how many times our leadership declares victory in Iraq, we just can’t seem to keep our military out of that country. Little by little, the US government is quietly sending more troops to Iraq, this time to counter Russia’s presence in the region bring the fight to ISIS.

Defense Secretary Ash Carter announced on Monday while visiting Baghdad, that another 200 troops will be sent to Iraq, raising the total number of troops in the country to 4,100. The deployment will mainly consist of advisers, support crews and security forces, who will be backing up the fledgling Iraqi Army.

Most of the advisers will be special forces that will accompany Iraqi brigades as they try to recapture the city of Mosul. In addition to this, the deployment of Apache helicopters has been approved, as well as a long-range artillery rocket unit. $415 million will be given to Kurdish Peshmerga units that are battling ISIS.

Despite the fact these troops will be in support roles, it’s believed that this deployment will put these soldiers closer to the front lines. A handful of soldiers and marines have already been injured or killed fighting ISIS, so there’s no doubt that American casualties will begin to mount in Iraq once again.
