A case of mistaken identity has gone horribly wrong in Perth, Australia where an innocent man was captured by police and taken to a mental hospital where he was detained and dosed with extremely dangerous psychoactive drugs. Simply because he “fit a description”.
“Western Australia’s Mental Health Minister has apologized to a man who was arrested and drugged after being mistaken for a patient from a psychiatric hospital. Police arrested the man on December 16 as he fitted the description of a patient who had gone missing from Graylands Hospital in Perth. Graylands staff wrongly confirmed the man’s identity before administering a strong antipsychotic drug for schizophrenia. They realized their mistake when the man had an adverse reaction to the drug and was rushed to hospital.”
Greens MP Alison Xamon has called for an inquiry, saying that:
“I’m absolutely horrified to have heard about this. I think it raises so many questions about what’s happening with the procedures. It certainly requires some very serious investigation, if not inquiry.”
Mental Health Minister Helen Morton apologized for the traumatic experience that the man suffered through, but not sincerely. Responding like a typical bureaucrat she said that those responsible will be held accountable….. once a review is completed.
What is most disturbing about this situation is how quickly and easily something like this could happen to the average person, and it also shows how careless police are with the lives that they hold in their hands.
