Incoming Coronal Mass Ejection
Todays sunspot number is 62, and I’m starting to wonder if the solar maximum has already passed. It can take many weeks after such an event to confirm what has happened so we will have to wait for the next NASA announcement regarding the timing of the maximum.
A CME thrown off by sunspot AR1836 will hit the Earth’s magnetic field on September 1st. Coming from a relatively minor C8 flare it’s not expected to cause any major problems.
AR1836 poses a threat for larger flares but at this point is not fully Earth facing. NOAA estimates the chance of flares as just 0.1% over the next 24 hours.
