Idaho Officer Resigns After Two DUIs in Three Days

A sergeant from the Caldwell Police Department who was arrested twice in three days for drunk driving has resigned from the city police force.

Caldwell Police Chief Frank Wyant confirmed that the officer, Sgt. Adam Matthews, had resigned on Monday, June 19.

According to court records, on June 15 a Canyon County Sherrif’s deputy observed a 2016 Ford Fusion cross over a double yellow, and swerve into the shoulder of the road. The deputy waited for the Ford to pass him before he pulled over the driver, who he reported smelling like alcohol, later identified as Matthews.

The off-duty officer denied drinking, but a breathalyzer test showed a blood-alcohol level of 0.19, over twice Idaho’s legal limit. According to the arresting officer, Matthews also had bloodshot eyes and had a hard time keeping his balance during a field sobriety test.

Court records show that Matthews was arrested for the same reason on Saturday, June 17, just days after his first arrest.

Both DUI charges are misdemeanors. Matthews’ first court appearance for one of the charges is set for June 20.

It is apparently a saucy season for some of America’s cops, with at least four cases of drunken deputies and plastered police just in San Antonio in recent weeks.
