Horrified Couple Discovers Live Scorpion in Store-Bought Spinach Bag

Sometimes the standard food items at the grocery store are natural. Perhaps, a little too natural.

We all expect the same thing when we go to the grocery store. We expect to find food that is largely sterile, uniform, and probably laden with preservatives. That’s why a lot of folks spring for food that is organic and natural instead. However, sometimes the standard food items at the grocery store are natural as well. A little too natural perhaps.

That’s what a couple from Chevy Chase, Maryland found in a bag of spinach they bought from a grocery store on Monday. The wife claims that when she opened the bag she found something crawling inside, and managed to capture it in a bottle. “I thought it was a cricket in the beginning, and then I noticed when it was [in] the bottle that it is a scorpion.”

When her husband got home he took the bottle back to the grocery store. He told the staff there that they should remove their spinach product from the shelves. He eventually told News4 about what happened, and several hours after being contacted by the local news the store removed the spinach, but didn’t issue a wider recall.

Coincidentally, this isn’t the only recent story about customers finding animals in their salad. Fresh Express recalled their Spring Mix salad from stores throughout the South on Sunday, after a Walmart customer in Florida found a decomposing bat in her greens. Two people ate some of the salad before the bat was discovered. The CDC is currently investigating the matter, and is testing the dead bat for rabies.
