Home Update: The View From Across The Pond

Chickens first.

The chickens have slipped into our lives so smoothly it is like they have been there forever. They are no hassle. It is funny watching them come running up to you the way they do when they think you have food. Still getting six eggs a day and they eat anything so all our organic waste gets fed to them. Just fed them a leftover curry today so that could be interesting for someone. Anything I don’t want to feed to them gets composted instead so the only stuff we now throw out is plastic packaging.

Everything is going smoothly at the moment so I’m going to stop commenting on the chickens until something of note happens.

Solar Panels next. I’ve not had time to do anything about these yet.

Current status is I have bought a 120W solar panel, a 20A controller, cables and two 125Ahr batteries. The panel set, including cables, came to £204.99 and the batteries to £166. I also bought a book on how to wire them all up together.

I went for the kit because I wanted something that would fit together easily with no compatibility issues and also by addition of another panel I have a 240W system which is larger than any single item I want to power at this point. Buying a kit rather than individuals may work out more expensive but should be easier for as beginner such as myself to start with. The dual batteries are because I want to soak up as much charge as possible and maximize my power storage. Two may not be enough or it may be overkill but we will find out.
