California Health officials are urging the public to get the pertussis vaccine shot amidst reports that nearly 6000 suspected cases of “whooping cough” have been confirmed in the state.

Whooping cough, which can affect adults and children, is a highly contagious bacterial disease characterized by uncontrollable coughing. The “whoop” results from such strenuous coughing that those infected cough so violently that in between coughs they will be fighting to get air into the lungs, which causes a “whooping” sound.

The Centers for Disease control says that young children under the age of three, especially infants, are most at risk of fatalities from the bacteria.

If identified early on in those individuals who have yet to be vaccinated, CDC recommends treatment with antibiotics.

In light of recent outbreaks, and upwards of 17,000 cases reported nationwide in 2009, health officials suggest that all adults, especially those working in the vicinity of infants be vaccinated. Because the vaccine reportedly wears off in about five years, those who have been previously vaccinated are being asked to obtain a new shot, and officials urge parents of young children to immediately acquire vaccination.

The CDC reports that the pertussis vaccine is 70% to 90% effective in helping to develop the immunity needed to stop the bacteria.

Pertussis vaccine has been known to have a variety of risks and is believed to be responsible for causing infantile encephalitis, sudden infant death syndrome, and meningitis.

In 1979, the country of Sweden banned the pertussis vaccine, but it was reintroduced in 1996. Japan, due to the reported risks of the vaccine, also restricted its use until children are at least two years old.

According to numerous studies at the National Institutes of Health, the risks of vaccinations far outweigh the risks of not be vaccinated, not just for pertussis but many other contagious diseases.

In a contrary opinion, Haley Boyd Ph.D. testified before a House Committee on Government Reform in 2001. Dr. Boyd maintained that, “A single vaccine given to a six-pound newborn is the equivalent of giving a 180-pound adult 30 vaccinations on the same day.” It is well known that vaccines contain toxic chemicals like mercury, which could have severe implications, especially in children, according to Boyd,”include in this the toxic effects of high levels of aluminum and formaldehyde contained in some vaccines, and the synergist toxicity could be increased to unknown levels.”
