A former, white Google employee filed a lawsuit against the company, alleging the tech giant stopped hiring white and Asian men for certain technical positions.

Former nine-year Google employee Arne Wilberg claims the company started canceling interviews in 2016 and 2017 with people who are not black, Hispanic or female because the website was trying to improve its diversity, The Wall Street Journal reported.

Google had “irrefutable policies, memorialized in writing and consistently implemented in practice, of systematically discriminating in favor job applicants who are Hispanic, African American, or female, and against Caucasian and Asian men,” the lawsuit claims.

Employees were told to “purge entirely” the applications of people who did not meet the diversity requirements, instead choosing to pick from groups that were “historically underrepresented,” Wilberg alleges. The lawsuit, filed in January in a California court, claims the company fired Wilberg, who worked also as a YouTube recruiter during his time at Google, for voicing his concern about the company’s recruiting strategies.

“We have a clear policy to hire candidates based on their merit, not their identity,” a Google spokesperson said about the lawsuit. “At the same time, we unapologetically try to find a diverse pool of qualified candidates for open roles, as this helps us hire the best people, improve our culture, and build better products.”

Google also came under fire earlier this year after former employee James Damore filed a lawsuit against the tech giant, alleging the company frequently discriminated against white males, while managers maintained certain “blacklists” aimed at cracking down on anyone with a conservative point of view.
