Michael Shumacher, seven time Formula 1 World Champion, is fighting for his life after suffering a head injury in a skiing accident in France.

He is in a critical condition, in a drug induced coma, at the University Hospital Center of Grenoble. Doctors say it is too early to give an opinion of what the outcome might be.

Anaesthetist Jean-Francois Payen said:

“He’s in a critical situation – this is considered to be extremely serious.”

“We are working day and night at his bedside,” Dr Payen said. “It is too early to say anything as far as prognosis is concerned,”

A scan has revealed he has an intracranial haematoma (blood clot), contusions. and swelling to his brain. He has already had surgery to relieve the pressure and is currently in intensive care.

“Someone who had suffered this accident without a helmet would not have made it this far,” Dr Payen said.
