Former State Department Official Says Conflict Between Japan and China is “More likely than it has been in years”

Tensions over the small chain of uninhabited islands claimed by Japan and China is growing. Last week China set up an ‘Air Defense Identification Zone’ which has inflamed matters further.

Kurt Campbell told CNN:

“It would probably be a small skirmish, probably easily contained, tensions between the two countries are greater now than they’ve been probably in a half century.”

He continued:

“The drawing of a military air zone is deeply provocative. This is a recipe for the kind of incident that we saw in 1983,” he said, when the Soviet Union shot down Korean Air Lines Flight 007.”

The United States reacted less than favorable to the Chinese claiming the airspace around the islands as their own, promptly sending two unarmed B-52 bombers right through the middle of the restricted area.

Vice President Joe Biden is currently in China as part of a tour of Asia. He was told yesterday he should not repeat ‘erroneous remarks’ on the new air zone. His speech today touched on human rights, regional stability and economic growth. He admitted that the relationship between China and the United States was ‘complex’. (source)
