CNN is reporting that a family of six survived two days and nights of freezing weather by heating stones to stay warm.

A cold snap has been gripping much of the US, with temperatures dropping to as low as -34° in Montana.

Ice and snow have covered the mid-Atlantic and Texas before pushing up the East Coast.

The family, a couple and their two young children plus a niece and nephew, stayed close to their vehicle throughout the ordeal, heating stones in a fire and using them to keep warm. They had also told people where they were going and the route they were taking which assisted those searching for them.

Although they are in the hospital getting checked over, none of the group appears to have suffered adverse effects from their adventure.
