Family Had to Fight to Put ‘Jesus’ on Tombstone Because It ‘Might Offend Someone’

You better hope your friends and family loved you enough while you were alive to fight for your First Amendment rights after you die in this country.

Just such a fight took place recently when a Baptist pastor’s wife lost her battle with cancer and the family wanted to — wait for it — inscribe a six-inch Christian fish symbol ichthys with the name ‘Jesus’ inside it on her headstone. Gasp!

Shocking, I know. Apparently the director of the Sterling, Colorado city-owned cemetery the woman was set to be buried in was not going to allow it, claiming that choosing to put Jesus’ name on a gravestone “might offend somebody” according to Fox News.

The family took their fight to carve ‘Jesus’ on the headstone to the city manager, who told them they would have to take it up with the city attorney. Instead, they took their fight to social media and shamed the town on Facebook, and that (sadly) did the trick. Only then did the city manager give in, telling a local news station the city would stop censoring people’s religious gravestone preferences.

The First Amendment covers the freedom of religion. The family has a right to display that religion on their dead loved one’s grave marker, because that’s what rights are. They purchased the marker. They purchased the plot. City-owned or not, they have a right to erect a marker on it by law. Did I mention the whole cemetery, just like the thousands of cemeteries like it all over the country (a country with a currency which still says “In God We Trust” on it) was filled to the brim with religious symbols all over other headstones already erected there? Again, shocking, I know.

I would challenge the Sterling, Colorado cemetery director to find one person with an I.Q. over 85 who is truly shocked to see the name Jesus being displayed somewhere in a cemetery. Is anyone anywhere genuinely surprised by religious symbolism displayed in cemeteries? Wouldn’t that be a little like being shocked to find sports novelties such as team flags and foam fingers at tailgate parties?

Is the government really going to start attempting to regulate what we can put on our gravestones after we die in the interest of political correctness now? Because, I don’t know about you, but I’m pretty sure that would officially (and laughably) make us a country full of the biggest sissy crybabies in existence, the kind that get beat up at the pool after school.

Of all the places someone can get offended at, are cemeteries really of great concern? Let’s go ahead and imagine a situation where this would actually happen and play it out.

If you are going to visit the woman’s grave in the story above, chances are you are at least an acquaintance and therefore you would know she was a pastor’s wife. Accordingly, you would not get offended if she had a six-inch fish with the name ‘Jesus’ carved into her headstone, unless you had some sort of mental disorder where you thought the fish was calling you names and talking to you and you couldn’t make the voices stop.

If you were at the cemetery to visit someone else’s grave, you are already likely sad or at least wistful to be there because, for the majority of people, death is a sad thing as you will miss the person who is dead even if you believe them to be in a better place now. What are the odds that you are going to randomly see this woman’s headstone as you are making your way to the stone of the person you meant to visit, then somehow suddenly decide that person isn’t worth your time because you would rather waste your energy and emotions getting offended that somebody had her religious beliefs displayed on her headstone which really won’t effect you after you stop looking at it because you didn’t know that person and she has nothing to do with you?

If that is you, and a six-inch Jesus fish inscribed on someone else’s gravestone really offends you that deeply, if that’s all it takes, well then perhaps it is time to reevaluate your life just a teensy bit.

Funny, but the way things are going in this country, I get the feeling had the family opted for a baphomet head or Swastika on that marker, no one would have thought twice about it.
