Evacuations Begin as Hurricane Matthew Moves Toward Florida

Hurricane Matthew continues to travel northwest at about 10 mph through the Atlantic and is expected to hit the coast of southern Florida by Thursday evening or Friday morning.

Matthew has sustained winds of 115 mph and has claimed the lives of at least 25 people. This Category 4 hurricane became a Category 3 in the past week, but some are projecting that it will gain momentum as it travels northeast.

Florida residents are now beginning to prepare for evacuations after Florida Governor Rick Scott urged them to prepare for the hurricane to make landfall. “Leave now,” he warned.

“Everyone in the state should be prepared for a direct hit,” said Scott at a conference Wednesday morning.

South Carolina is also beginning evacuations, even though it is premature to say whether Matthew will travel as far as South Carolina.

South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley ordered Charleston and Beaufort County residents to leave on Wednesday ahead of the hurricane. Georgetown and Horry County evacuations are set for Thursday.
