Elon Musk: Tesla Solar Roofs Will Have An “Infinity Warranty”

Tesla introduced its solar roof tiles in more detail and started taking orders for them yesterday. Some were surprised by the price and the warranty, which Tesla says is good for the tiles as long as the house stands and it guarantees 30 years for power generation.

Elon Musk said that the new Tesla solar roofs will have an “infinity warranty.” If you’ve considered one of these solar roofs, now may be the time to make the purchase. In a tweet, Musk promised that ordering would be available in most countries throughout the world and he clarified that people could expect to see delivery begin in the United States in late 2017. He also said that deliveries would roll out sometime next year for overseas locations.

During a conference call with journalists to discuss the announcement of the new solar tiles, Tesla CEO Elon Musk said that the electric architecture of the solar roof system was proprietary to Tesla and they didn’t want to go into details about it. Instead, they discussed the development of the system, which, according to Musk, involved “a shocking amount of technology.”

“This is a connector that has to last for more than 30 years. It has to be weatherproof, heavy rain, snow, slush, salt, water leaking – it’s like connector hell.”

Tesla CTO JB Straubel then added that the automaker managed to leverage its experience manufacturing connectors for electric vehicles:

“A lot of the challenges here leveraged some great learning from the Tesla team on validating automotive connectors and volume production processes. Tesla is building all these tiles ourselves – we are not outsourcing it. We have been able to solve those more complexed design problems and hit those price points that you see.”

The solar roof has almost everything going for it, other than the upfront cost of installation. The Telsa website shows images of the roof, and it’s impossible to tell that the roof is made of solar panels. A press release from Tesla claims that, on average, a solar roof will cost $21.85 per square foot, if 35 percent of the panels are active and the rest are inactive. Inactive panels are about $11 per square foot, while the active panels are $42 per square foot, according to Peter Rive, SolarCity’s co-founder and CTO, and Elon Musk’s cousin. The 35 percent number was derived from Consumer Reports calculations to estimate approximately $53,500 worth of electricity production over 30 years.

Although this energy is far from “free” as Nikola Tesla first desired, the cost appears to offset eventually, although it will take years. “It’s important that people compare the true cost of a roof as opposed to the highly optimistic cost that ends up coming in twice as much,” Musk said.

As technology improves, we may see ourselves come to the brink of free energy. But it’s unlikely to happen while the government has the power it does. With the suppression of free energy in the name of making money and “national security” the government has a vested interest in keeping energy costly, say conspiracy theorists. But, in the meantime, this may be an alternative for those looking for the cleaner energy they can literally use at home.
