‘Drone-vertising’: Great, Now UAVs Are Going to be Flying around Selling Us Stuff

That’s right. Tagline? “Advertising has never been so high.”

Am I the only one who feels like I’ve been born in the wrong time period?

Or maybe we just permanently live in 1984 year after year after year…

Apparently the next trendy new thing will be drones flying around everywhere trying to sell you stuff.

That’s right. Tagline? “Advertising has never been so high.”

Meet “drone-vertising” (via Yahoo! News):

Sometimes it seems like every technological innovation ultimately just turns into a new way to show us ads. But drones?

Yes, drones, too: Ads of the World and PSFK have brought to our attention the concept of “drone-vertising,” in this case represented by Moscow-based agency Hungry Boys.

As depicted in the video below, the idea was to hype a local restaurant chain by dispatching a bunch of drones, carrying promotional signage, as they float by office windows and along sidewalks, encouraging office workers to stop by for lunch at the restaurant.

Working in a highrise? Don’t be surprised when a little drone flies past your window holding a sign that says, “Eat at Joe’s”. (Or five of them every five minutes…)

Another company, DroneCast, will use drones to fly targeted ad banners around town:

Other drones have projectors built in which will fly around cities and project ads on the sides of buildings at night.

The casual observer is likely thinking of all the ways in which this situation can and will get annoying real fast. However, when confronted with these videos (and the cheesy marketing muzak playing in their backgrounds), I can’t help but think of the slippery slope to pervasiveness and abuse we’re all riding on with this.

We already live in a country where our government has openly declared we are being spied upon all the time. I’m sure things can’t get any creepier, right?

In Russia, drones are already delivering pizza…and Amazon has discussed delivering products via drone as well, an idea for which the company is spending millions in lobbying efforts in Washington (countless hours at the FAA, apparently) as we speak.

Of course, wait until these things are the size of dust motes

In the meantime, I’m just going to sit here and ponder which movie I’m actually living in: The Matrix, 1984or They Live. Wasn’t it Blade Runner that had giant advertising blimps constantly overhead?
