Donald Trump Unveils Plan to Vet Immigrants With Ideological Test

“Those who did not believe in our Constitution or who support bigotry and hatred will not be admitted for immigration into our country.”

When Donald Trump first suggested that we should temporarily exclude Muslim migrants from entering the US, the media jumped on the comment and called him a racist (even though Islam is a religion and not a race). Now he has unveiled an immigration plan that isn’t quite so inflammatory, which he delivered in a teleprompter guided speech on Monday.

The plan would involve vetting immigrants on an ideological basis. “Any hostile attitude towards our country or its principles, or who believed sharia law should supplant American law,” Trump said, “those who did not believe in our Constitution or who support bigotry and hatred will not be admitted for immigration into our country.” He added that this litmus test would question migrants and visitors on subjects like gender equality, religious freedom, and gay rights.

At the same time, his plan would still bring a halt to immigration from certain countries. Trump said he would “temporarily suspend immigration from some of the most dangerous and volatile regions of the world that have a history of exporting terrorism.”

His speech also reasserted his opposition to nation building efforts that have been so common under President Obama, and made it clear that he wants to work with any nation that is willing to fight radical Islam, including Russia. “I also believe that we could find common ground with Russia in a fight against ISIS. Wouldn’t that be a good thing?”
