Deadly Tornadoes Hit Illinois, Indiana and Kentucky
At least five people were killed, and it is feared that several hundred people may have been injured in the fast-moving storms. A number of people are still thought to be trapped in buildings. All the fatalities so far have been reported to be in Illinois.
Powerful tornadoes have swept through the Midwest, destroying buildings and overturning vehicles in Illinois, Indiana and Kentucky.
At least five people were killed, and it is feared that several hundred people may have been injured in the fast-moving storms. A number of people are still thought to be trapped in buildings. All the fatalities so far have been reported to be in Illinois.
The rapid-moving storm – with winds of up to 68mph is continuing to move east and could affect many more people before it finally fizzles out.
One person died in the town of Washington, IL, two in southern Massac County, and an elderly man and his sister were killed when a tornado struck their farm house in the community of New Minden.
Eyewitnesses described how large parts of Washington County had been levelled by the tornadoes.
“People can fall into complacency because they don’t see severe weather and tornadoes, but we do stress that they should keep a vigilant eye on the weather and have a means to hear a tornado warning because things can change very quickly,” said Matt Friedlein, a National Weather Service meteorologist. He went on to say that storms as strong as this are rare so late in the year as higher temperatures during the summer months are better able to sustain thunder storms.
