Dash Cam Footage: Cop Speeding With No Lights Kills Pedestrian
“If an officer chooses to speed without lights and siren, then he has to accept responsibility for his actions.”
Last September, a police officer in Berrien County, Michigan was racing to the scene of a domestic abuse incident, when he struck and killed a pedestrian. Based on evidence that was later collected at the scene, in addition to eyewitness reports and the dash cam footage, it was determined that officer Eugene Anderson was driving 64mph in a 35mph zone. While it’s not unheard of for a cop to drive like that, what makes this case especially egregious, is the fact that Anderson was speeding at night and didn’t turn on his lights or siren.
Anderson has since been prosecuted for the death of the pedestrian, 48-year-old Kimberly Bedford. His lawyer argued that the speed he drove couldn’t be proven, and Bedford was intoxicated when she crossed the road. Still, the prosecutor found him at fault for Bedford’s death, and said “If an officer chooses to speed without lights and siren, then he has to accept responsibility for his actions.” The officer has since been found guilty, and faces a year in jail.
Gee, I wonder how much time you or I would spend in jail if we plowed through a pedestrian while speeding?
