Congressman Proposes Legislation to Kill Draconian Gun Laws in NY and NJ

The legislation would specifically limit the authority of states to regulate rifles and shotguns “commonly used by sportsmen and sportswomen.”

Congressman Chris Collins (R-NY- 27) has introduced legislation to the US House of Representatives titled the “Second Amendment Guarantee Act.”

Collins said of the proposed bill,

“This legislation would protect the Second Amendment rights of New Yorkers that were unjustly taken away by Andrew Cuomo. I am a staunch supporter of the Second Amendment and have fought against all efforts to condemn these rights. I stand with the law-abiding citizens of this state that have been outraged by the SAFE Act and voice my commitment to roll back these regulations.”

The legislation would specifically limit the authority of states to regulate rifles and shotguns “commonly used by sportsmen and sportswomen.” The act was aimed squarely at the heart of the draconian anti-gun, anti-liberty, anti-human so-called “SAFE (Secure Ammunition and Firearms Enforcement) Act” signed into law by Democrat Governor Andrew Cuomo in 2013.

The Collins legislation would prohibit all state and local governments from creating laws and regulations that are more restrictive than Federal law when it comes to the “sale, manufacturing, importation, transfer, possession, or marketing of a rifle or shotgun.”

Congressman Collins held a press conference to announce the submission of the legislation at events in Erie and Monroe Counties in New York State. Conspicuous from these events were any US Congress or Senate members.  Instead, the events featured elected officials at the state and local levels, all Republicans. It also featured gun supporters of “the Second Amendment.”

While it certainly is refreshing to see elected officials make a game showing of supporting the basic liberties that human reality makes self-evident, you will have to excuse me if I offer up a smidgen of pessimism that this legislation will ever see the light of day. In a twist of irony sure not to be lost on anyone, if this legislation were to somehow pass and get signed into “law,” anti-gunners would find themselves arguing against the legislation on the grounds of “states’ rights,” a traditionally conservative favorite position to defend.

The legislation was introduced July 28th, 2017.  =If you go to the congressional record, you will find that no further action has been taken on the legislation since it was introduced.

You will also note that the legislation has garnered just TWO co-sponsors, Congressman Tom Reed (R-NY-23), and Congressman David Valadao (R-CA-21). Both congressmen became co-signers on August 18th, 2017.

Congressman Collins’ Press Release was on July 31st. Until now, the submitted bill, along with the press release, has received little attention from the media. The recent additions of two co-sponsors has brought this legislation to the attention of media outlets.
