CME Hit Produces Amazing Auroras

There might be another opportunity for photographs tonight. NOAA forecasters estimate a 40% chance of polar geomagnetic storms on July 15th as CME effects subside.

The CME that hit Earth on July 13th was a mild one. It did unsettle the Earth’s magnetic field and produced some beautiful, high altitude auroras such as this photographed by Michel Tournay of James Bay Canada.

The coronal hole on the Earth side of the Sun is sending out a solar wind stream that will arrive on July 19-20th.

Todays sunspot number is 88 and none of the spots are thought to harbor the energy for active flaring.
