Chicago PD Desperate to Destroy Records Before Homan Square Investigation

Homan Square black site Chicago

It’s been nearly a year since the American public was first made aware of the notorious Homan Square jail in Chicago. Though perhaps “jail” isn’t the right word for this place. At least in American jails there is some faint enforcement of human rights and the rule of law. Homan Square on the other hand, is more like a CIA blacksite where people accused of crimes can be held off the books, tortured, and refused contact with family and attorneys.

So far over 7,000 people have been run through this secret interrogation site between 2004 and 2015. And those are just the people who have an arrest record. Nobody knows how many people have been detained off the books and released.

As you might expect, the secretive nature of this facility means that most of these people have never had the opportunity to share their experiences. But the few allegations that have escaped that dark place are absolutely horrifying. Suspects have been shackled for hours on end and not allowed bathroom privileges until they soil themselves. They are threatened with violence against themselves and their families if they don’t become informants. Some have been threatened with being injected with heroin to induce confessions. Another detainee accused the police of sodomizing him with a handgun.

However, these are just allegations. It would suffice to say that the police don’t want the truth about Homan Square to come out in any official capacity. In fact, after all these stories came to light, the interrogation facility is finally being investigated by state and county officials. And not surprisingly, the police are desperate to destroy any record of their crimes.

As the Cook County Commissioner and a state representative both call for a federal investigation into the CIA-style black site known as Homan Square, Chicago police union officials are fighting to incinerate decades of police misconduct records. Although the city, an investigative journalist, and a University of Chicago law school professor have battled in court to preserve the misconduct records, police unions argue that red-flagged officers should not be judged by their marred past.

While Cook County Commissioner Richard Boykin and the Board of Commissioners prepare to address a resolution on Wednesday calling on the DOJ to expand its investigation into Homan Square, leaders of the Chicago NAACP and state Rep. La Shawn Ford are working to prevent the Chicago Police Department from destroying any police misconduct files older than five years.

“My understanding is it’s simple: don’t destroy the records. Keep them forever. In today’s time, it’s clear that we can do that,” asserted Rep. Ford. “The only people or organization that destroying the records would benefit would be the police.”

Like a tyrannical regime with an enemy army at the gates, or a fraudulent company that is about to be raided by the feds, these cops are freaking out about this impending investigation, and they are trying to burn all evidence of their horrible deeds. Truth be told, their well publicized intent to destroy these records speaks louder than any of the evidence they want to destroy.
