Carrier Operations In The Persian Gulf To Be Limited Due To Cuts

USS Harry S.Truman

Cuts of $85 billion this year will see the carrier USS Harry S. Truman docked in its homeport of Virginia. Although military chiefs asked for two carriers to be stationed in the Persian Gulf the Pentagon has decided that financially it can only afford to send one.

The USS Harry S. Truman is one of ten nuclear powered aircraft carriers and as the Navy bears the brunt of defense spending cuts it will not be working in the foreseeable future.

Chuck Hagel the new Defense secretary said that four of the Navy’s air wings would also little by little, stop flying. He added that the air force will have to cut flying hours and that the army will reduce training for all except those people due to be deployed to Afghanistan. He said recently:

“Let me make it clear that this uncertainty puts at risk our ability to fore fill all our missions. We will be forced to assume more risk, with steps that will progressively have far reaching effects.”

The US naval presence in the Gulf is considered crucial by the Pentagons and there are rising concerns that should extra hardware be needed in the region the US could be caught out with support  too far away to be of immediate use.
