California State University Now Offers Black-Only Student Housing

The black community fought hard and made countless sacrifices to put an end to segregation in the United States. They put up with asinine laws and racial violence for decades before the government finally decided to treat them as equals. But ironically, some of the descendants of the people who fought to end segregation aren’t so keen on living with white people.

That’s why California State University, Los Angeles is now offering voluntary segregated housing for black students. The housing unit was demanded by the Black Student Union nine months ago because they wanted black students to be protected from microaggressions and racially insensitive comments.

The newly dubbed Halisi Scholars Black Living-Learning Community will provide “A cheaper alternative housing solution for Black students” according to the student union, and will “also serve as a safe space for [black students] to congregate, connect, and learn from each other.” A spokesman for the university explained that the housing unit will also provide “academic excellence and learning experiences that are inclusive and non-discriminatory.” The Black Student Union also demanded a $30 million scholarship program for black students, as well as anti-discrimination classes for faculty and students.

CSLA isn’t the first school to offer black-only housing. It seems to be a new trend among college campuses, and this type of segregated housing has recently been offered at UC Davis, Berkeley, and the University of Connecticut.
