UPDATE: Conservative cabinet minister Jason Kenney confirmed to the Toronto Star that the Canadian soldier shot earlier while guarding the National War Memorial has succumbed to his injuries. A security guard was also wounded in the exchange at Parliament Hill. Authorities are still currently searching for multiple suspects.

Multiple gunmen reportedly opened fired at the Canadian Parliament letting off 20-30 rounds just before 10 a.m. this morning, just after one soldier guarding the National War Memorial in downtown Ottawa was shot, condition unknown at this time.

CBC Canada reports:

MPs and other witnesses reported several shots fired inside Parliament, and a gunman has been confirmed dead inside the building. The soldier’s condition is not known as this time. Police sources say there is more than one suspect, and shots have been reported at other locations surrounding Parliament Hill as the downtown area remains in police lockdown.

Via MSN:

Eyewitnesses said an armed man with long black hair emerged at the National War Memorial, fired about four times, and a guard went down. The gunman, who an eyewitness said was carrying what appeared to be a rifle, then ran toward Parliament Hill. The shooter is still on the loose, police confirmed.

Additional reports of shots fired at other locations have come in, including east of Parliament Hill near Chateau Laurier hotel.

Numerous reports continue to come in, and details are changing rapidly. The most updated information says that a shooter is still believed at large somewhere in downtown Ottawa, and the area remains on lockdown as police are going door-to-door on Sparks Street and searching all cars leaving the area to go to Quebec. MP Bernard Trottier confirmed that at least one gunman was shot and killed by police.

All three main party leaders are unharmed and in safe locations.

A Globe reporter caught the exchange of gunfire at Parliament Hill on video:

The attack comes just two days after a 25-year-old man deliberately ran over two Canadian soldiers in a mall parking lot near Montreal. The Prime Minister’s Office has released a statement saying the man “had become radicalized.” He was shot by police and later died of his injuries.

Conservative MP Randy Hoback also referenced “unconfirmed reports” of a “possible terror attack” on Monday during the press conference over the hit-and-run.

It is unclear if these incidents are connected.
