Last weekend, the owner of the “Rubbin’ Butts” BBQ restaurant in Milliken, Colorado, announced that he was planning to create a “White Appreciation Day.” What initially started out as a joke, eventually turned into a real plan to give all white patrons a 10% discount on that day. He went so far as to post a sign on his restaurant which reads “White Appreciation Day June 11th, Because All Americans Should be Celebrated.” But since that time, he has been scolded on social media, and even received a bomb threat which is currently being investigated.

The restaurant’s owner, Edgar Antillon, is a Mexican-American who claims that he’s faced his fair share of racism during his life, but that didn’t change his desire to identify himself as an American. The whole point of this celebration was to criticism politically correct holidays such as Black History Month and Hispanic Heritage Month. He doesn’t believe any race should be celebrated above any other, and that we’re all Americans first. “I should be celebrated every day of the year, but so should white people and so should black people,” he said. “We should all be celebrated all year long.”

Antillon defended himself on CNN by stating “our intention wasn’t to put white people on a pedestal, our intention was merely to fight fire with fire, and eliminate the need for all that. We’re all Americans, we all have a history, bad, good, indifferent.”
