Avian Flu Outbreak In India

Over the last 20 months H5N1 has appeared in wild birds and poultry in countries which had been virus free for several years.

Thousands of fowl and eggs were destroyed in the Indian district of Purnea over the last 24 hours due to an outbreak of H5N1.

Although no humans have been infected at this point there is a worry that such a populated area, where many live in close proximity to domestic poultry that human cases are more or less inevitable.

Although only a couple of cases have been proven where human to human spread has been proven H5N1, like all influenza viruses has the ability to mutate, or re-combine in other animals which would make it a major threat to humans.

A new strain is already circulating in Vietnam and there has been widespread monitoring of the situation in Japan, a relatively close neighbor.
