113 sunspots today
The massive sunspot AR1785 is slowly moving across the Suns disc. It’s still situated more to the southeast than the central location that would mean any flare would hit Earth square on.
Ar1785 and AR1787, which is following very close behind, will move into the center of the Sun within a day or two of each other. They both have a massive amount of magnetic energy that could see major flares in the coming days.
NOAA estimates the chance of an X-Class flare at 10% over the next 24 hours.
The Carrington event of 1859 caused major problems here on Earth, and we never had much technology at that point. If the same storm hit today it would cause billions of dollars in damage to the infrastructure and could lead to power outages lasting months.
