A Tiny fraction of Comet Ison MAY Have Survived

hmi200

NASA is reporting that a fragment of Comet Ison may have survived its encounter with the sun. You can see their video here. Although they can’t be entirely sure what has happened yet, the feeling is that the comet broke apart and vaporized, though a small fragment may have survived and completed it’s journey around the sun. They will issue updates as more information is available.

There is low activity on the sun today. Todays sunspot number is 100.

Sunspots AR1907, AR1908 and AR1909 are growing, and they have the energy for M-class flares but are not yet active. NOAA estimates the chance of flares over the next 24 hours at 0.5% for X-class and 25% for M-class.

There are no coronal holes on the earth-facing side of the sun.
