Pilgrims have already started arriving, and millions more are making their final travel arrangements before leaving their homes and travelling to the holy site. Millions of people huddled together provides excellent breeding conditions for numerous diseases including MERS.

MERS has many variables. Incubation time varies from individual to individual as do symptoms which range from nothing more serious than a common cold to multi-organ failure and death.

Human to human transmission of the disease has been confirmed.

So far there have been just 136 cases, 58 of which have proved fatal. It’s to be hoped that the Hajj does not cause a massive uptick in cases and that all the pilgrims return home carrying nothing more than happy memories and a few photographs.
