5 Dead And 500 Unaccounted For In Colorado Floods

Rocky Mountain rescue management officials say as many as 1,000 people were awaiting rescue north of Denver.

Unprecedented rain has lead to flooding in Colorado leaving 5 dead and 500 people unaccounted for. Roads have washed out, and the loss of 50 bridges has left many communities cut off and without power and fresh water. Police and emergency services are hoping that many of those unaccounted for are unable to communicate rather than lost to the floods.

President Obama has declared Colorado a disaster zone and has sanctioned federal help to help the recovery efforts.

Helicopter airlifts of stranded people were halted on Sunday due to more torrential rain and poor visibility.

Officials say that up to 1000 people are awaiting rescue in the area north of Denver.
