Weapon Used By Dallas Shooter Has Been Revealed, And It’s Not an Assault Rifle

Though there have been several conflicting claims floating around on the internet, most mainstream news sources are currently suggesting that Micah Xavier Johnson used an old SKS rifle to kill 5 police officers in Dallas on Thursday. If true, it would certainly throw a wrench in the typical mass shooter narrative that gun control advocates hold so dearly.

That’s because the SKS is no assault rifle. It’s a popular military surplus arm developed and mass-produced in the 1940’s and 1950’s in several communist nations. Most variants of the rifle are heavy, fire from a fixed 10 round magazine, are loaded with 10 round stripper clips, and use the same intermediate cartridge as the AK-47. It’s so tame that it can be sold in states like California without any modifications.

Even with some of the aftermarket modifications that are available, the SKS is not an ideal weapon for going toe to toe with dozens of armed police officers (and yet Micah still managed to kill and injure all of those cops with it). There are extended fixed magazines that hold 20 or 30 rounds, but they still require troublesome stripper clips to reload, and are nearly impossible to reload before completely emptying the magazine. There are aftermarket detachable magazines available, but they are notorious for having reliability issues. It’s possible that he used a Chinese SKS that can accept AK magazines reliably, but they are fairly hard to find these days, and often cost just as much as an AK-47. If that were the case, why wouldn’t he have just bought an AK-47 instead?

If he really did use an ordinary SKS, it was probably a weapon that is a far cry from the “assault rifles” that the Left is always screaming about after every mass shooting. However, that hasn’t stopped countless mainstream media outlets from calling the weapon he used, an “SKS assault rifle.”

Typical of the lamestream media, any kind of shoulder-fired weapon used in a crime qualifies as an “assault rifle.” These people have absolutely no familiarity with firearms. But when did ignorance of a subject ever stop the lamestream media? They never let facts get in the way of a good, emotionally-charged story.

There is a cult of ignorance in the United States,
and there has always been. The strain of anti-intellectualism has been a
constant thread winding its way through our political and cultural

My SKS isn’t very accurate, plus haven’t fired it in about 12 years. Stripper clips hold 10 rounds, 20- 30 round magazines do exist , especially out West. I only bought the thing – and lotsa’ cheap ammo – back when because that idiot Clinton was banning crap left and right.
The Ruskies and Chinese made these cheap junkers. 300 meters battlefield open sights that adjust further out. Cheap bayonet, aftermarket scopes and brass catchers can be found. Plus hellfire triggers are available.
But i find guns to be too loud and prefer sipping on something cold with ice. Don’t shoot cops, just sue them into oblivion when they daily violate your inherent rights.

The SKS in the picture is a Yugo, the Chinese SKS is a total piece of crap and the one really worth having is the Russian. With a Tapco stock replacement, a rear receiver replacement to add a scope, 20 round magazines and some good ammo, the SKS is still no match for a good AR. LoL, assault rifle.

    • Helluva3ngineer

Those receiver cover mounts are JUNK.

      • Mary Brown

On an AK, the one on my Tapco SKS conversion is rock solid and fine for a red dot (2x) or a 4x scope. 100 yards is about the max for any reasonable group(mine does 4″)

    • I__AM__GOD

He had money for all sorts of stuff, including tactical schooling. But he grabs the SKS? This makes no sense from a guy who was using special forces style attack techniques, and was trained on the M4.

It’s like charity. You put some old clothes in a bag and give them to a charity that sends them to the poor people Africa. You just put some poor dirt eater that makes and sells clothes out of business because there customer base is getting new modern western fashion for free.

Time to call Bu!!$h!t on the lone gunman narrative.
My guess is, there was a team (spotter/shooter) in an elevated hide, and the street level shooter working with the aid of a spotter.

    • Bob Stoufus

More likely a team of 3 minimum. First witnesses saw at least two shooters on rooftops. Can’t imagine any idiot would give up a distinct tactical advantage of an elevated position to come to ground level.

Further proof that it’s not the gun, it’s the person using it.

  • frankw

I had a Remington Model 8 semi-auto, stripper clip fed like the SKS. A fun gun and reasonably accurate. Mine was in .35 Rem, a slightly more powerful than that used in the SKS. It was built in 1916. Silly me. I didn’t know they built “assault rifles” back then.

  • Helluva3ngineer

Funny, I could swear I already saw some outlets saying it was an AR-15. Must be that meme about the media’s guide to guns where every rifle was an AR-15 EXCEPT the actual AR-15 was right after all.

    • SP_88

Every mass shooting was done using an AR-15 assault rifle that can fire 500 magazine clips per minute.
I think that the reason why the media calls AR-15’s automatic weapons is because someone misunderstood a memo that went out to everyone that said “whenever there’s a mass shooting, it was automatically an AR-15”. But they just meant to automatically assume it was an AR-15, and by the time they determine what weapon was actually used, it’s too late, the AR-15 has already been demonized.
The media and the gun grabbers will never be satisfied until they have demonized every firearm as a dangerous killing machine. They would refer to a two shot Derringer as a “high capacity weapon” if every other firearm was already banned, just so they could continue to push gun control to the point of nobody having a firearm.
To be clear, the leftist gun grabbers are not anti-gun, they are just against us having guns. They will still have their armed security guards to protect them from all the dangerous “right wing extremists” and “Constitutionalists”. Plus they will need to use armed government thugs to execute all the dissidents and enforce their communist dictates.

If it’s semi-auto, they want to ban it. They learned to not go after types or cosmetic affectations or furniture.

  • Jon A. Underwood

The rifle used was a 7.62mm AK derivative called a VEPR not a SKS. The SKS has the same round, but is visually different than the actual rifle used, the VEPR, a higher quality AK, (Avtomat Kalasnikov) it had a M1913 rail or also called a picatinny rail so the electronic sight he used could be mounted to it.

  • Vladimir

Actually, I wish the killer had used an AR or AK variant. Now the antigun sons of bitches will Zero in on all semiautomatics and not just the “scary looking” guns, commonly called assault weapons. Most seem too dumb to realize that a simple weapon like the SKS can be nearly as effective as more sophisticated “black rifles” with higher capacity detachable mags. The guy could have been very dangerous and effective with a simple .30/30 Model 94 Winchester or a bolt action .303 Lee Enfield. Antigunners want to ban everything.

  • I__AM__GOD

No…why wouldn’t he use an AR-15, since he was most certainly trained on the M4 Carbine.

    • bosunj

      Couldn’t afford it.

      • I__AM__GOD

That was my first thought. But on closer look….he certainly paid for other weapons, and specialized training. Another 300 for a workable AR? Not buying it.

  • I__AM__GOD

What was the decision that day? The SKS or the Mosin-Nagant? Serously WTF?
