Video: University Professor Argues That ‘Algebra and Geometry Are Now Racist

Talk about insane! This one takes home the trophy! It used to be algebra and geometry were required courses for those students who wished to attend college. They were considered college prep classes.

Now, these same classes are considered ‘racist’? Come on people! This is nothing more than political correctness gone amok!

professor at the University of Illinois made the claim that algebra and geometry perpetuate white privilege because “emphasizing terms like Pythagorean theorem and pi” give the impression that math “was largely developed by Greeks and other Europeans.”

Rochelle Gutierrez’ work “focuses on equity issues in mathematics education,” and worries that evaluations of math skills can perpetuate discrimination against minorities, especially if they do worse than white students.

Watch Liz WheelerOAN News, set this virtue signaling snowflake straight. Hilarious!

Campus Forum reports:

Rochelle Gutierrez, made the claim in a new anthology for math teachers, arguing that teachers must be aware of the “politics that mathematics brings” in society.

“On many levels, mathematics itself operates as Whiteness. Who gets credit for doing and developing mathematics, who is capable in mathematics, and who is seen as part of the mathematical community is generally viewed as White,” Gutierrez argued.

Gutierrez also worries that algebra and geometry perpetuate privilege, fretting that “curricula emphasizing terms like Pythagorean theorem and pi perpetuate a perception that mathematics was largely developed by Greeks and other Europeans.”

Math also helps actively perpetuate white privilege too, since the way our economy places a premium on math skills gives math a form of “unearned privilege” for math professors, who are disproportionately white.

“Are we really that smart just because we do mathematics?” she asks, further wondering why math professors get more research grants than “social studies or English” professors.

Further, she also worries that evaluations of math skills can perpetuate discrimination against minorities, especially if they do worse than their white counterparts.

“If one is not viewed as mathematical, there will always be a sense of inferiority that can be summoned,” she says, adding that there are so many minorities who “have experienced microaggressions from participating in math classrooms… [where people are]judged by whether they can reason abstractly.”

To fight this, Gutierrez encourages aspiring math teachers to develop a sense of “political conocimiento,” a Spanish phrase for “political knowledge for teaching.”

Unbelievable! This is nothing more than political correctness gone amok! Totally insane!

National Review responded:

Now, whenever I see stories like this, I just have to ask one question: What, exactly is Gutierrez proposing that we do? Because other than her statement that “things cannot be known objectively; they must be known subjectively” — apparently, a suggestion that additional focus, respect, and grants should be given to nonmathematical fields — I’m not really seeing one.

This is particularly true when it comes to her statement that math curricula “emphasizing terms like Pythagorean theorem and pi” makes math seem too Greek and European. To me, it seems like the decision about what to teach in mathematics should be based solely on the standard of what will be most important for students to learn in order to succeed.

From the Daily Wire:

In a joint statement released last year, two organizations, TODOS: Mathematics for All and the National Council of Supervisors of Mathematics (NCSM) said “social justice” is “a key priority in the access to, engagement with, and advancement in mathematics education for our country’s youth.”

“[A] social justice stance interrogates and challenges the roles power, privilege, and oppression play in the current unjust system of mathematics education — and in society as a whole,” reads the lengthy missive.

NCSM and TODOS went on  to assert that, historically, math has perpetuated “segregation and separation” since “mathematics achievement, often measured by standardized tests, has been used as a gate-keeping tool to sort and rank students by race, class, and gender starting in elementary school.”

“Citing the practice of ‘tracking,’” notes Campus Reform, “in which pupils are sorted by academic ability into groups for certain classes, NCSM and TODOS argue that ‘historically, mathematics and the perceived ability to learn mathematics have been used to educate children into different societal roles such as leadership/ruling class and labor/working class leading to segregation and separation.’”

The statement continues, lamenting the notion that students must “master the basics” before tackling complex problems:

In practice, children placed in “low” groups experience mathematics as an isolating act consisting of fact-driven low cognitive demand tasks and an absence of mathematics discourse opportunities. This is because of a pervasive misguided belief that students must “master the basics” (e.g., know the times tables or “basic facts”) prior to engaging with complex problems solving.

NCSM and TODOS are also deeply concerned about white teachers in classrooms comprised of mostly minority and immigrant students.

“The groups also bemoan the ‘white and middle class’ workforce of math teachers, fretting that it may not appropriately ‘reflect’ the demographics of the communities in which they teach, such as immigrant or racial minority communities,” notes Campus Reform. “Social justice could be the key to solving these issues, they say, calling on math teachers to assume a ‘social justice stance’ that ‘challenges the roles power, privilege, and oppression play in the current unjust system of mathematics.’”

Addressing the grievances listed in their statement, the organizations plan on hosting a free webinar, opening to the public a hearing called “A Call for a Collective Action to Develop Awareness: Equity and Social Justice in Mathematics Education.”

Where has the world come to? I’m so sorry, but kids do NEED to master the basic facts before they can go onto things like algebra and geometry. That’s a fact. As a former mathematics teacher, almost every teacher that has ever taught math would tell you the same thing too!

Talk about a dummy down society! When you stop teaching the basics and don’t require kids to know their simple addition, subtraction and multiplication facts – you have big problems. Aren’t there enough kids who work retail, who don’t know how to give the correct change anymore, without a digital cash register thinking for them? Come on people! This is NONSENSE!

This is reprehensible for our schools to do this! It goes along with schools not teaching cursive writing. Public education used to be quality. Now it’s a joke.

Why does anyone even give these idiots the time of day much less news coverage? This ranks right up there with the now-infamous “Feminism and Glaciology” paper.

I must admit, though – I loved watching Liz Wheeler nail this idiot SJW Gutierrez to the wall.

It just shows that there is no idea so idiotic that some academic somewhere won’t treat it seriously. Nor, it seems, is there any idea so idiotic that a book written to support the idea can’t find a publisher.

  • John C Carleton

Math beyond addition, subtraction, division and multiplication was never my forte anyway.
For once i find myself politically correct with one of those idiots who try to teach, cause they sure as hell can not do.

    • tonye

Calculus is actually a beautiful way of looking at things.

Then you got all the analysis tools that you are not considering.

No one can be hot s#it in every area.
You are obviously a math head. Thats great.
David Hackworth, retired from the US Army as a Colonel. Could have gone all the way but he had honor, integrity, and empathy for the common solder getting his butt shot off so international corporations could make a killing.
In his book about his life, he said he learned right off the bat, he could not find his own butt with a map and a compass. So when he took command, he made sure to surround himself with people who could.
Now an old wolf like me, when he needed to lay some mortars in on someones butt, makes sure theres someone like you doing it.

Also, laying out fields of fire for the camp, the transversing and bull on the crew served weapons, have some one like you doing that.
Me, i have no use for that transverse gadget on the tripod. Unlock it and i will walk it right up your backside without the math, cause thats one of the areas where i am hot s#it.
Everyone is a cog in the gear, without which, nothing would work.

Mathematics is a philosophy, a way of thinking in very abstract terms.

I’m a physicist myself… mathematicians go fully nutsoyd when the physicists say “well, the pencil hits the ground, so all of these terms go to zero” and scratches out half the terms of an equation that are so endearing to the mathematicians.

We use mathematics the way a rich fellow would use an expensive escort in Las Vegas. Yep, we treat mathematicians like whores… we use their heads, dump them when we got what we need and then smoke a cigar.

Do you read Science Fiction? Neil Stephenson? His account of Leibniz? It’s actually pretty funny and pretty much to the point. Leibniz was a true philosopher, Newton was more of a hacker.

          • John C Carleton

Way of speaking, everyone has a place. i have know some math heads, had an algebra teacher in high school was an math head.
Now, a real math head, does not belong around sharp objects, much less the battlefield, as you say, in a locked back room designing ever more interesting ways to kill your fellow man.
While i on the other hand, don’t give a damn about the gee whiz world, got more important things to do, like fight and win the battles and wars.
You have a class of warriors. Not everyone puts on a uniform, learns how to kill, is a warrior.
These warriors fight the wars while the math heads figure out new war toys.
Like i said, cogs in the wheel.

          • tonye

Math heads…. now, THAT’s funny to people like me.

I know a few “math heads”, they know some things in very deep detail, but are full m0r0ns when it comes to other stuff that the rest of us inhertently understand.

Like I wrote, we Physicists will own the world, because we know Science, have a sense of humor and many of us know that Nicaraguan cigars are better and cheaper than Cubans.

Oh, that TV show, “The Big Bang Theory” is NOT about physicists at JPL/Caltech. Those characters are silly, more like an Abstract Artist with less phobias. Scientists are not silly. We are not cogs, we are fusion magnetic motors! ;-D

I worked at JPL a while back.

You see, i really don’t care about your world, and i assure you, you are more impressed with your self, than i am. Who you are, what you are, what you do, is so immaterial to me , as to be the same as the gas emanating from the rear orifice of a mangy desert jackass.
Except for the bother of the oder.

            You are so important.
            You are smarter.
            Yours is bigger.
            Happy now?
            Have a wonderful night.
            Bless your little heart.

          • tonye

Aw jeez….. you fail to see my humor and sarcasm!!

          • John C Carleton

I see you brag about hiding in back rooms making toys to kill people with.
Well, Russia done kicked your butt!
            Russian war toys actually work.
i have lots of experience with the crap US math heads forced on the troops,
i would rather have Russian weapons, which work, when my butt depends on them.

          • tonye

            Do UAVs work?
            Does the Internet work?
Do American aircraft drop their bombs in place?
            Do satellites communicate?
Have you flown in a C17? ( then thank me)

I don’t know what you used, I know what I’ve done, more than half of which is commercial, and it all works.

And, as I wrote, I am not a “math head”….

Yet apparently no white cultures ever built astronomically aligned pyramids.

    • Razedbywolvs

      Except for the Egyptians.

      • Matrixixixix

        Are northern Africans considered white?

        • Razedbywolvs

          • Matrixixixix

Ah ok, I see. That raises further questions about the true origin ancient Egyptian culture. As usual the official story doesn’t suit the evidence. Bit to much to get into here. I don’t believe the Egyptians built the pyramids anyway. I think they inherited them.

        • NowHardToStarboardSheerAway

No, they are black in the traditional sense, with wide noses and other African attributes. The Sphinx before it’s nose was shot off looked like your average black.

Don’t take from that content their do; Egypt, Timbuktu, Sheba (Ethiopia) were great cultures at one time.

After fronting off her own stupidity, how is it she still has a job?? It would be real easy not to hire this one, she readily admits she is stupid, as opposed to those that don’t front themselves off!

  • rouge1

And people pay money to send their children there lol. Really it not funny handicapping someone in life like that, but I guess if you are to lazy to teach your kids yourself.

Cars are racist……….nice homes are racist……sanitation is racist…….and on and on and on.

    • ReverendDraco✓ᵛᵉʳᶦᶠᶦᵉᵈ ᵃᶜᶜᵒᵘᶰᵗ

Let’s just cut to the chase – Civilization is racist!

Only when everyone lives in equally-depressing mud huts without electricity or running water, walking to the doctor because there are no cars, to be denied treatment because the doctor doesn’t know any science or math. . . will True Equality rule the planet. . .

      • Phil_Ossifer

It’s all about power, Rev. The Left is made up of insignificant little weasels who know they’re insignificant little weasels. And they know that we know what they are. Since they’re incapable of rising above mediocrity they think that tearing down Western Civilization will raise them above their betters.

The sickening thing is how complacently we sit back and let them do it.

This “academic,” Rochelle Gutierez, has a Ph.D. in Education (Curriculum and Instruction), NOT mathematics. For those who don’t know (but probably suspect), doctorates in education are laughably easy to get especially if you are a SJW. Someone with a real doctorate (e.g., in mathematics) wouldn’t give this idiot the time of day.

      • Roy Hobs

That is certainly the direction. Thank goodness I’ll be dead by then. Depressing.

  • Mike Kearn

cun ts like that need bitch slapped with a 13″ dong

  • Richard Dean Anderson

I’m going to get ahead of all the SJW’s and say….racism is racist.

    • Phil_Ossifer

Why not? The Supreme Court essentially says that the Constitution is unconstitutional.

  • Yankee27

    Something doesn’t add up.
All they need is basic meth (oops, I meant math)

  • what if…

Good to see that the sexy, sexist teacher is still doin alright tho, isnt it? Flaunt those looks if ya got em beautiful, were listenin!! Doesnt even matter if youre a liar as long as ya look good doin it, sombody is paying attention!

Talk about a distraction!! This is exactly how it is done psychologically, and good is flipped over to bad while we are focusing on a pleasant external appearance!

  • Phil_Ossifer

In high school (fifty-something years ago) I took geometry and we had to do hundreds of proofs of geometric concepts. It taught you about not only geometry itself but how to think rationally, logically and reason from basic principles. If this is no longer being taught the only reason has to be that the shitlibs who control education don’t want kids to learn how to think and reason from basic principles and observations. This isn’t surprising since the shitlibs in charge are incapable of doing to themselves.

  • tonye

Doña Guiterrez is severely lacking on her history. Geometry and Arithmetic were created by the Mesopotamians, Zoroastrians, Indians and Arabs.

The Greeks were terrible at arithmetic because they lacked the ‘0’. Indeed, they though the concept of ‘0’ was abominable from a philosophical perspective. The Roman numeral system was pretty bad too, even as they managed to do some awesome engineering feats.

Perhaps, people with no understanding of mathematics and a deep lack of history should STFU and go their own way.

Or perhaps she thinks we should be teaching “heart removing sacrifices from a live victim atop a pyramid” instead? After all, that may FEEL good to someone…

Take the politics out of math and science.
