A Georgia police officer was caught on camera “protecting and serving” a homeless woman. The incident occurred at a gas station in Decatur, Georgia on June 4 and the beating was caught on a cell phone video.

The police officer claims that the woman was “out of control” while “resisting arrest.” The cop was called to the scene after customers reported that a homeless woman was soliciting customers inside of the Chevron gas station’s convenience store.

Katie McCrary was allegedly beaten by a Georgia police officer for resisting arrest.

The woman, identified as Katie McCrary in a police report, is on the floor as a male police officer beats her with his baton. The officer had filed a Use of Force report after the incident and had been cleared following an internal affairs investigation until this video surfaced.

Maybe we don’t “see what led up to this” severe beating, but it’s clear that she’s not resisting arrest. She’s actually squirming in an attempt to avoid additional blows to her body. Any human, or animal for that matter, would respond in the same manner.

In light of the new cellphone video, the DeKalb County Police Department said in a statement Monday, “Now that the Department has this new evidence we have reopened the investigation and will determine whether the incident is consistent with policy and the law.” This beating marks yet another notch on the belt of controversy that has risen over the scrutiny of police brutality and killings.

According to the police officer, whose identity has not been released, the incident was reported on June 5, the day after he repeatedly hit McCrary with a baton. He said when he arrived at the gas station, McCrary “attempted to push me out of the way and walk out of the door.”

McCrary allegedly tried to walk past the officer again, according to the police report. She allegedly told the cop she was a federal agent, according to his incident report. More words were exchanged and McCrary “reached out and grabbed my badge,” and after being warned not to touch him. She “grabbed my vest and radio,” according to his incident report.

He said he used his baton on her legs, forearms and “one strike inadvertently struck the side of her head as she was moving around.”

There has so far, not been a validation of the cop’s story except by the DeKalb County Police Department. They said in a statement, “The narrative in the officer’s report appears to be consistent with the video.” But witnesses and the video itself paint a different picture. At one point, the cop brutally places the baton on the back of McCrary’s neck and pins her down with his knee on her back. When she grabs his baton, he says twice, “Let it go, or I’m going to shoot you.” After placing McCrary in handcuffs, she asks several times, “What did I do? What did I do wrong?”

McCrary was charged with obstructing or hindering law enforcement officers. She was given a criminal trespass warning at the request of the convenience store manager, police said.
