The Socialism Diet: 75% of Venezuelans Have Lost an Average of 19 lbs

Ever since oil prices plummeted several years ago, not a day has gone by in Venezuela that was not worse than the day before. The once oil rich socialist nation has plummeted to the depths of poverty. Their currency is worthless, government services and infrastructure are crumbling, and food shortages are ubiquitous.

The latter of those conditions has resulted in Venezuelans losing a significant amount of weight. According to a recent study conducted by the National Survey of Life Conditions (ENCOVI in Spanish), 75% of Venezuelans have lost 19 lbs of body weight over the past year.

While it’s now widely known that Venezuela has severe food shortages, the study reveals just how fast starvation conditions are escalating under the Maduro regime. When ENCOVI conducted the same study last year, they found that 11.3% of the population only ate one or two meals a day. That number has since grown to 32.5% of the population.

But just because most people are still getting three meals a day, doesn’t mean those meals are nourishing. So far 82% of the population is living in poverty and 93.3% say that they don’t have enough money to cover their food needs. There is very little meat to be had in Venezuela, and most people are surviving on bananas and potatoes.

In addition, an astonishing 65% of the families who were surveyed, said that they had children who had skipped school for food related reasons. Many of them have had to spend all day standing in line at the grocery store instead of going to school (which may be a more valuable experience for these kids, since Venezuelan schools extol the virtues of socialism at every opportunity).

With numbers like this you have to wonder, how long will it take before Venezuela loses its collective mind, and violently overthrows the Maduro government?

ah socialism, the way to starve your citizens to death.

Watch for China to show up, offering food and foreign aid – in exchange for a large stake and control of Venezuela’s oil production. China will pay off the VE government and elites and provide just enough food to quell any rising popular revolt. This would be a strategic coup for CH, providing them with petroleum that they desperately need and a foothold on the southern approach to the US. Next would come the missiles, purely for “defensive” reasons on behalf of VE, and PLA-Navy would be cruising the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean. Good times!

    • Reminds me of the suggestion made by Robert Ringer that we sell California to China to pay off our debts to them.

I don’t know. China right now is trading U.S. debt for American oil. We are becoming a major exporter to them. They would rather have our oil than American dollars. They may need to dump American dollars right now.

  • One has to wonder if Venezuelans are really stupid enough to go hungry when they have more than enough farm and ranch land to grow more than enough food to feed everyone on the sub-continent. That said, it may soon be discovered that Americans are equally stupid.

I don’t know. Most that I have seen there was been years. Small mountain farms with little ways to ship much food out to the bigger cities. But Socialism may have changed that. So small towns near farms may be in better shape for food? Just no way to get it to the big citys.

      • Before there was the means to transport food to distant markets, most food was produced within a day’s travel by horse or mule. Let the big cities fend for themselves and we’d have fewer of them. The majority of American lived in rural areas at the beginning of the Great Depression. The majority of Americans now live in big cities, and many of them don’t understand where food comes from before it gets to the grocery. Urban gardens are getting more popular, but there aren’t enough of them to feed the urban populations. Socialism has nothing to do with it. If I can buy food from local farmers and ranchers, why would I need a grocery?

But you find this world wide. The further people need walk to the store & wait in line the more weight they loose. Even on a high carb diet. I find this true were I live. Just walking to the dock for fresh fish or walking to the market here helps keep the pounds off. Maybe it is gas is to high priced there so people are walking more? Not a food shortage. Just takes more energy to find the food there than they get from it. Not that some can not be found. So low oil prices are a blessing to them. In a way.

How convenient. Pick on the one that is failing, but don’t mention the ones that succeed.
Canada, Denmark, Finland, Norway, Sweden, Netherlands, Belgium, Ireland, and New Zealand are socialist. They have higher standards of living than America.

      Denmark is failing.
Finland, Norway – Sweden especially – failing.
      Ireland & Belgium, failing.

      • Roddy Pfeiffer

They are still ahead of America. You forgot to mention that.

        • ReverendDraco✓ᵛᵉʳᶦᶠᶦᵉᵈ ᵃᶜᶜᵒᵘᶰᵗ

Actuly, not ahead. Nice fantasy, but that’s all.

In theory they should live 10 or so years longer than Americans.

  • G’ma G

Rather than overthrowing the government the people would do better with their energies to develop their own networks of food production independent of the government. Next up would be energy cooperatives stepping in where government is failing.

Another FAKE NEWS. The article blames the whole thing to Maduro, but is not mentioning or telling who’s behind the shortage, the sabotage, the smuggling of food, etc, the tons of Venezuelan paper money found in Paraguay, Colombia, Brazil and Switzerland, not a word. isn’t saying that is the private sector together with the Venezuelan opposition the ones behind all of these, orchestrated by Washington of course, in order to destabilized the economy and blame Maduro using at the same time the Washington orchestrated Western media to spread lies. Simple. It’s incredible to see how a lie goes around the world and people believes it
