The EPA Takes an Ax to Self-Sufficiency: Most Woodburning Stoves Will Soon Be Illegal

When you think of that little dream homestead in the woods, what does it include? Probably a well and septic system, a little stream bubbling nearby, a chicken coop, a sunroom for winter growing, and a cozy fire to curl up next to.

When my daughter and I spent a year living in a cabin in the Northwoods of Canada, our woodstove was our lifeline. It was the only source of heat in a place that reached -42 degrees. It was the only way we could cook when our power went out during snow and ice storms (as it did frequently). It was the cozy center of our home, and we survived for an entire frigid winter for less than $800. After that experience I vowed never to live in a home without a woodstove.

If the EPA has its way, however, heating your home self-sufficiently with wood could soon become illegal – or at the very least, insanely expensive.

Off Grid Survival reports:

Shortly after the re-election of President Obama, the agency announced new radical environmental regulations that threaten to effect people who live off the grid. The EPA’s new environmental regulations reduce the amount of airborne fine-particle matter from 15 micrograms to 12 micrograms per cubic meter of air.

This means that most wood burning stoves would now fall into a class that would deemed unacceptable under these new draconian measures. The EPA has even launched a nifty new website called Burn Wise to try to sway public opinion.

On their site, while trying to convince people to get rid of their old stoves and buy the new EPA-certified stoves, they state that these older stove must be scrapped and cannot be resold.

From the EPA Site:

The local air pollution agency says I can’t sell my old wood stove to help pay for an EPA-certified wood stove. Why is that?

Replacing an older stove with a cleaner-burning stove will not improve air quality if the older stove is reused somewhere else. For this reason, wood stove change out programs usually require older stoves to be destroyed and recycled as scrap metal, or rendered inoperable. (source)

And here is the information right from the EPA:

Enclosed is the list of wood stoves certified by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The EPA Certified Wood Stoveslist contains information about wood stoves or wood heating appliances that have been certified by the EPA along with its manufacturer name, model name, emission rate (g/hr), heat output (btu/hr), efficiency (actual measured and estimated), and type of appliance. It also indicates whether the appliance is still being manufactured. An EPA certified wood stove or wood heating appliance has been independently tested by an accredited laboratory to determine whether it meets the particulate emissions limit of 7.5* grams per hour for noncatalytic wood stoves and 4.1* grams per hour for catalytic wood stoves. All wood heating appliances that are offered for sale in the United States are subject to the New Source Performance Standard for New Residential Wood Heaters under the Clean Air Act and are required to meet these emission limits. An EPA certified wood stove can be identified by a temporary paper label attached to the front of the wood stove and a permanent metal label affixed to the back or side of the wood stove.

See the EPA’s list of acceptable woodstoves HERE.

One of the easiest ways for the government to force this issue is through homeowner’s insurance policies. If you have a mortgage, you have absolutely no option but to carry homeowner’s insurance. Even if you own you homestead outright, most people consider insuring their homes and property to be a vital safety net. When your policy comes up for annual renewal, the insurance company can require an inspection of your home. At that time, compliance can easily be forced by either charging insanely high rates or through the cancellation of the policies of those who have “outdated” woodstoves.

An Attack on Self-Sufficient Living

The ability to heat your home off-grid is a major part of most preparedness plans. Heating with wood is the number one way to do this. Much like our food supplies, the ability to keep ourselves warm and healthy and the ability to cook without being connected to the grid are vital to our freedom.

Those of us who live this lifestyle are constantly targeted. In many places it’s illegal to collect rainwater. Growing food in your front yard instead of flowers is all but outlawed. Sellers of raw milk have their farms raided by SWAT teams as though they’re running a meth lab instead of a dairy. We are being Codex Alimentarius-ed and Agenda 21-ed right into slavery and the government and it’s agencies try to make it appear that they are “saving” us.

We, the self-sufficient, by our very nature, are a threat to this insidiously spreading control. Our self-sufficiency means that we won’t be forced to be subjugated, tagged, chipped, and inventoried like our less prepared friends and neighbors. We won’t have to cave in order to survive. We can eat, stay warm, and stay off the radar. And this is a threat because we can withstand the assaults on our freedom. We don’t need the government’s benevolence to survive. Those of us who don’t need the government are the last hold-outs of liberty in a country that has strayed far from it’s freedom-loving origins.

The “Credibility” of the EPA

Don’t be fooled by environmental friendliness or the warm and fuzzy green words. The EPA is just another tool of subjugation. Their stamp of approval carries the same “credibility” as that of  USDA or FDA approval. The Environmental Protection Agency, that bastion of clean air and fertile land, wants you to believe that they are taking steps to save us all.

You know, the same folks who upped the legal levels of glyphosate for their friends at Monsanto, even though the herbicide has been proven to cause toxicity and death. The same agency that responded quickly when radiation from the Fukushima disaster reached dangerous levels on the shores of California by closing down 8 of their 18 radiation-testing facilities in California and increasing the “safe amounts” of radiation that we can absorb.

The EPA (or as I like to call it, the Environmental Deception Agency) tends to  find things to be highly threatening to the environment only when those things allow us to be non-reliant on big business.

One controversy after another can be attributed to the EPA, an agency charged with protecting the air we breathe, the soil in which we grow our food and the water that we drink. At the bottom of each of those controversies can be found ties to the conspiracies of the big businesses that really run the country. Decisions are being auctioned off to industry lobbyists with the most money and influence.

Environmental protection is only the rule of thumb if it goes along with Agenda 21 – the EPA is all over the green agenda in cases that benefit the redistribution of wealth, but the agency completely ignores blatant crimes against the earth if it involves fracking for the benefit of a natural gas company or poisoning the soil and groundwater for the benefit of a biotech monolith.

yeah, whatever – EPA is illegal.

  • Tom T

Good Luck with that. These people are morons (no offense to actual morons) and have no idea what Is comming back at them if they keep this crap up. Most Americans are fed up with this government regulating every single aspect of our lives. Yes, the EPA is not an enumerated power therefore should be a state responsibility if it exists at all.

    • anonymous

      +100, Tom T. Well said.

Does this mean camp fires are illegal too? I would think so since they dont have the same effiency as the stoves not counting what other then wood product people throw into camp fires. Maybe I shouldnt give them any ideas.

  • grumpaw

if they want my stove then they should take every Welfare persons Pets away from them our taxes should not have to feed the pets for people whom cant feed themselves, And watching welfare people buy Steaks and Shrimp on Our Dime kinda/really pisses me off to;; dont get me started//

As long as they are dependent on the gov., the world is their oyster. It’s the independent people who had better get with the times!

  • Mojo Nixon

If you actually do your due-diligence, you would see that heating and cooking uses are exempt from the emission standards. This means wood stoves and barbecues will not be banned.

I used to like this site, now it is just pushing-out sensational garbage.

    • kirby

right, be sure to thank the epa for their kind permission to live on their planet, and suck their air when they are through with it. im so greatful for them.

    • QWERTY

But for how long until they tighten their hold on the populace? That’s the problem. It’s called “murder by inches”.

  • RickE.

Excuse me Mojo, but a wood stove is ONLY used for those 2 things, which ARE its uses! Heating and cooking-that’s it!
What would another use be, aesthetic pleasures maybe??? Good God.

    • Paula

If you would read mojo’s statement you would understand what they are saying. People like you are idiots

    • Bryan

Yeah….awkward. Maybe you should read mojo’s post again slowly so that you understand it. Your comment shows that you didn’t do that the first time.

We’re reaching the point where even Liberatarians / NAP-adherents are aware they’re being aggressed against, and will start “handling” things pre-emptively. It’s still self-defense at that point, you’ve been attacked already.

Maybe it’s time to go hunting?

  • Andy

As long as there are trees on my property I will heat my home with wood!Government intrusion must stop, one way or another, but it looks like it might be by force because that is all this administration understands! Be prepared and ready.Keep your powder dry.

“Get govt out of the way.”

    That is next step.
The govt has abused it’s power and pushed the people far too long.

Govt must get out of the way.

Oh so the EPA said something….

  • Real Man

Crimes against the earth? Really fucking grow up its libtard greenies like you that is giving the EPA the power they have now.

  • delta1

Just my opinion – this is a good thing. The EPA isn’t banning stoves or woodburning – just encouraging or in some areas requiring EPA certified stoves be used. They are cleaner burning, which is good for all of us. Just as newer cars are more fuel efficient than older cars, the newer wood stoves are more efficient. If you have asthma or care about the air you and your children/grandchildren breathe, why wouldn’t you want to use a cleaner burning woodstove?

    • So genius your worried you kids can’t breath clean air and my fart producing stove will harm them eh… where do you go to protest the volcanoes that in one belch eliminate 100 years worth of driving a bazzion priuses and volts??????

Common sense does seem to escape way too many people about 48% of you folks that voted for teh pos-potus….think I’ll lite up a cigar….thanks for the entertianment..

    • Anonymous

If that’s the case, why does my ’74 Toyota motor home get over 40 miles to a gallon of gas, my 68 Volkswagen gets almost 60 MPG, and my 82 datsun gets between 35 & 40 MPG? Its been a hassle finding parts to keep them running, but all 3 are still on the road. I have yet to see anything newer even come close to matching that. Since the new rule went into effect that cars only had to get 30+ mpg none of the car makers are going any further than they have to. Thanks for killing innovation people.

      • Jean

Also, the new cars are carrying like 200 lbs of extra “safety” equipment, and all electronics-based (breaks, wears out, vulnerable to EMPs).

The engines are better, but there’s a LOT being ADDED – which makes it harder and harder to get the efficiency (across the fleet) that Government mandates.

It also means higher prices at list, and thus higher costs in insurance, and frequently, totaling a usable car – because the airbags fired, and it’s too costly to repair vs. replace.

Keep those old cars. Keep them on teh road as long as possible.
They’ll be made illegal soon enough – all in the anme of “safety,” of course. Like the speeding ticket mailed to your home is about “Safety,” because it’s obvious you’ll get home to receive the ticket…

Things are too big to control, so “they” are controlling us. Time to stop accepting the ass-rape. Time to remind them, we DON’T need THEM. We existed for centuries and generations without these huge international corporations, and without a huge, overbearing government, too.

We need to STOP them from controlling us – by any (ALL) means.

        • kirby

these clowns need reminding, its a gov. FOR and by THE PEOPLE” THESE ASS CLOWNS are EMPLOYEES ! when they think they own the company, its time to FIRE THEM !

  • norandmurr

All of these government agencies pass mandates restricting our freedom to live as we see fit, when truthfully, at least as far as I’m concerned, we are under no obligation to submit to their dictates. Only congress has the Constitutional right to pass laws, and even many of those are questionable. The only laws we are required to obey (should we desire a world that works for all, not just those at the top) are the laws of the Universe. If we all do our best to live within Universal Law, the rest of this insanity, which many believe to be reality, would cease to exist. Humanity has methodically been brain washed into giving away their power to those they have been told “know what’s best”. People are beginning to realize that just because you are taught something in school, or by someone you believe knows more than you, does not make it true. We are only told what they want us to believe. When someone comes along who seeks knowledge and truth, they are ridiculed and dismissed. All the social engineering and mind manipulation has only one goal…..control. Once they no longer have control, they’ve lost. Their control is slipping away everyday as more and more people of the planet free their minds and become aware of who and what we are. We were meant to be so much more. We ARE so much more than they would have us believe. Self-realization and the raising of our consciousness on a global scale is the only way to win this war. It doesn’t require armed rebellion. It requires seeing and accepting the truth, and a refusal to take part in their delusion. To believe that a handful of people who control most of the world’s wealth and resources are so omnipotent that they can rule the lives of billions of people, is as absurd as believing a few guys with box cutters high-jacked a plane (without getting the crap beat out of them).

    • HughRichard

You fail to take into account that most people are nothing more than Co2 and poop processors. They have about as much backbone as a slug. They have already sold their soul to the devil so to speak and will never stand up for anything more than a handout. Some guy with a note from his mommy could have hijacked a plane pre 9-11 and everyone would have sat there and done exactly what they were told out of fear of getting hurt. We are a nation of eunuchs.

Even if you had someone with a pair of balls he would be restrainted by the rest because they feared he would get them all hurt. So we continue down the path to total subserviency and it is now greased and steeper than ever. shPeople may be beginning to realize something is wrong but it is too late. We have lost the ability to do for ourselves, we have lost the very thing that made us unique in the animal kingdom. We are now a milling mindless herd. We now are now owned and standing in line to be branded and culled.

Those that stand apart are noted and will be destroyed in order to keep the rest of the herd calm and controlled. Stand your ground. Hold your head high. Keep your pride intact. I know I will, but I also understand that it IS too late. Nothing we do will make a difference now because we were complacent for to long. We are nothing but keyboard warriors now and they know it.

Dont believe me? Just google videos of riots and see how we behave. Thousands of protestors RUN from a couple dozen cops banging their shields. If we really intended to overwhelm the opposition and make changes to our system we would not run but instead overrun them. We do out number them dont we? If that is not proof enough (along with every thing we see happening every day) that we are defeated I dont know what else will. If I am wrong prove it. Come on tough guys, make my day.

      • RickE.

You’re right! And the reason for folks not overwhelming the cops in such a scenario is because 1), people are afraid of getting hurt. 2), lots of folks don’t WANT to hurt others.

We ARE the many dots, the government is the tiny dot!

  • Mike

What the difference between old wood-stove and EPA cert. wood-stove? They both burn the same wood and smoke. So really you are being force to pay more to the government just because it EPA approve.

This is very wrong on what the government is doing to the American people, it time we rise and fight back for our rights

  • ZombieDawg

    More paranoid nonsense…
This is pure and simple atmospheric pollutant minimisation as is the case across the world and indeed where I am in down here in Australia over 15 years ago. In fact I worked with the doctor who studied the pollution levels and saw his study and recommendations to government.
The exact same deal. Dump the inefficient polluting woodheaters in favour of modern compliant ones.
    No conspiracy.
    No vendetta against self-sufficiency.
    Just reality.

    • and my reply to you is the same when a volcano belches as teh do around teh world and spew mega tons of GOD given CO2 for the life cycle of ecology who regulates the volcanoes?????

How about a methane filter for your emission orfice if the head allows any to escape??? [/sarc]

  • FU EPA

FYI By 2020 in Canada most wood burning will be band. Furthermore most major population centers have made open fireplaces illegal, including that nice one in your living room. Your Home can NOT be sold with out making your fireplace inoperable! I bet any amount of money that within 25 years the USA will do the same., Why you ask,,,,,,,because the major population areas in the USA like NYC, LA and so on, don’t have wood stoves or a fireplace. So the avg. stupid voter won’t care when laws like this come to your living room. The way I see it we the readers of this site are the sheep and the millions and millions of city voters are the wolves! Remember “2 wolves & sheep voting on what’s for dinner” get ready and stock up!

  • Ken, your UK friend

    Vive le Canade!
Half the population of France but 20 times the area. J’adore Shania Twain country. La musique est le Roi! Hard, impossible to police beyond the Eastern Cities and Vancouver. Switch that stove off and risk damp meaning the building gets structurally unsafe and children will suffer worse from respiratory disorders. I call this neglect (le négligence).
What about open bonfires? Fireworks? Does a cigarette meet carbon targets?
    This isnt regulation its insanity.
    Oh mon Dieu!
    So help me God.

  • bigReb

this article is complete bull the epa could never do this…..some of the articles on this site go tooooooo far even for me to belive.

    • RickE.

bigReb, unfortunately the article is correct.Go to the EPA’s website and read the crap regarding this.
Enforcing it will be problematical though, with the exception of insurance and when selling the house.

Otherwise they’ll have to get the fireplace police going. What a thought huh??

    • TAG

How’s life with the head in the sand? Of course they can do this! 5 years ago we wouldn’t have thought we would be FORCED to by health insurance. But we are. In 2008 we were promised no new taxes. But we got them. We were also promised HOPE AND CHANGE and YEP! We got them. Just not what we were hoping to change however. The sheep have gave the power to the new regime and they WILL do whatever the hell they want. It isn’t going to get any better. Get a fireplace. Might be the difference in freezing or surviving. I chose survival.

  • Mike in Grasonville

The out and out leftists at the EPA are in for a rude awakening, as in a physical tearing down of their whole operation by the Patriots in this country who have had more than enough of their loony dictates. These people are control freaks, and there is only one way to deal with them.

  • sam

hu what about the huge wildfires the country gets do to the governments miss management of public land.

  • Ghetto Ass Obama

I’m buying another wood stove now just beacause fuck the left.

  • kiss it Obama &EPA

Obama and the EPA has as much chance getting my wood stove out of my house as my guns come and get them if you want them good luck lol hell I’ll even leave the porch light on for you…. so I can see you and have a good aim.

    • Jean

      Get some propane tanks….

IF they come, open the propane valves, go out the back, taking only what you NEED – and let them shoot each other, and blow themselves to hell. 🙂

Also, re:Light? BACKLIGHT them, keep the lights off for you so they can’t see in, and get some thermal sources at body temp… 🙂

  • Public Citizen

So how does this affect our Mennonite, Amish, Traditional Native American and similar groups that view simplicity and a traditional way of life without the trappings of modern technological society as a matter of religious or philosophical observance?
Seems to me that the EPA is setting themselves up for a series of battles that they will undoubtedly loose in court.
If we take this line of thought far enough we can find many lessons in the Christian Bible, the Torah, and the principle writings of all the major religions that teach us to be self sufficient as the first step toward our duty to engage in charity to our fellow man who is less fortunately situated.
I think that any person of faith who practices self sufficiency as a way of life can make a strong religious argument that the EPA is crossing a line that the courts have clearly delineated and said “thou shalt not cross” to multiple government agencies.

    • TAG

I wondered the same. The Amish community must be busting a gut laughing at this nonsense. I know I am! Our government just keep getting more ridiculous every day.

    • kirby

how can you loose in a court you bought and paid for ?

  • Evie

I live in an area where people burn trash. Will thegov give them a ticket?

    • TAG

I live in an area where it is illegal to burn trash. My closest neighbor is a Sheriff Deputy and burns all the time! So do I! Our local Sheriff also believes the government has gone to far. He is a STRONG supporter of citizen’s right to bear arms. Glad at least my county has my back.

      • Jean

HE is part of the government: the law doesn’t APPLY to him. But he’ll likely enforce it against YOU without a thought….

  • Randall

Fracking does not hurt the environment.

    • TAG

      Randal is “Fracking Nuts!”

  • Carroll

Perhaps it’s time to put the EPA on the fire. Screw them. How have we allowed tyrants to tell us what to do. I see some of their complaints having merit and justification but, they’ve assumed too much power and, proclaiming some silly issues when they are nothing more than just sheer power madness.

  • John

I bought a new cheaper wood burner a few yrs back. I didn’t realize it at the time but it was “EPA APPROVED”. Well I’m here to tell you all that the EPA made it suck. It burnt wood so fast and I couldn’t slow the burn down and was burning way to much wood. Until I made some mods to it by closing up all the vents they had. I’ve learned that the EPA doesn’t make things better they make things worst.

    • Jean

      Government makes EVERYTHING worse.

      And I started off as a Republican… 😛

  • dadwasright

Why don,t they make wild fires illegal too ?

  • Steve

How can you tell when you’re living under tyranny? When normal behavior becomes illegal.

  • quillerm

The US environmental impact study on wood stoves didn’t include the carbon emissions to produce thousands of miles of oil and gas pipelines, Fracking equipment and chemicals, oil platforms, thousands of vehicles to transport oil and gas, oil and gas transport ships, refineries, etc, The total emissions of all the Wood burning stoves and heaters in the US produce less emissions than the production of One Oil Tanker. Wood is found within 40 miles of the users residence, usually on the same property. It helps provide income for the local community. But the research was skewed to omit 99% of the equipment, steel, vehicles, etc., necessary for oil and gas production and transport.

  • Derrick

What on Earth. Propane is NOT a renewable resource. Wood IS a renewable resource. They may be trying to protect the environment, but their money would better be spent fighting forest fires than forcing people to burn LP or Natural Gas. Wood has been burned for years. Oil can’t last forever. Thus neither can propane, natural gas, fuel oil, and other options. Wood can continue to grow. When burned properly, it doesn’t need to smoke THAT bad. The gasifiers are a real pain and don’t work very well at all. It is simply ridiculous to think you can burn it upside down, then burn the smoke, and end up with no exhaust.
