Student Issued 10-Day Suspension for “Liking” Instagram Photo of an Airsoft Gun

Gun paranoia remains at ridiculous levels in US schools. This case is disturbing not only for the gun hysteria, but for the social media spying aspect.

A middle school student in Trenton, Ohio, narrowly dodged a lengthy suspension and possible expulsion from school because he did something people do every day: he “liked” a photo on Instagram.

Zachary Bowlin, a seventh grader at Edgewood Middle School, was slapped with a 10-day suspension after the school somehow found out the boy liked this photo of an airsoft gun on the social media platform:

“I liked it, scrolling down Instagram at night about 7, 8 o’clock I liked it,” Zachary said.

“I don’t think I did anything wrong. [The] next morning, they called me down and, like, patted me down and checked me for weapons. Then, they told me I was getting expelled or suspended or whatever,” he told NBC4.

Marty Bowlin, Zachary’s father, said, “I was livid, I mean, I’m sitting here thinking ‘you just suspended him for ten days for liking a picture of a gun on a social media site. He never shared, he never commented, he never made a threatening post… anything on the site, just liked it.”

“My wife called and said he’d been pulled in to the office, and he was being suspended because he liked a picture on Instagram that his friend posted .. of a weapon, of an airsoft gun,” Mr. Bowlin told WLWT5. “It was 10 days suspension with the possibility of expulsion. I’m like, ‘For liking a gun? Did he make a comment or threat or anything?’ And it’s like, ‘No. He just liked a picture.’ I’m like, ‘Well, this can’t happen.'”

Mr. Bowlin said his son’s decision to like the photo of the gun, which included the caption “Ready,” was harmless.

“The young man that posted it and my son, and probably four or five other kids, play airsoft in our field,” he explained. “So I pretty much knew what it was about. So I really wasn’t concerned.”

“I mean, I figured he’d cleaned his gun and was ready, wanting to play and stuff,” Zachary added.

On Friday, the school sent an email to parents that said:

“Yesterday evening school officials were made aware to an alleged threat of a student bringing a gun to school. We act on any potential threat to student safety swiftly and with the utmost importance. This morning, the alleged threat was addressed and we can assure you that all students at Edgewood Middle School are safe and school will continue as normal. Thank you”

An…alleged threat?

Can you imagine how alarmed parents felt – understandably – after receiving such an email?

It reads as if a student actually said they were planning to bring a real gun to school to shoot the place up.

Edgewood City Schools Superintendent Russ Fussnecker explained why the school issued a suspension and possible expulsion for Zachary, reports WLWT5:

“When you’re dealing with school districts nowadays and there are pictures of guns, regardless of the kind of gun it is, it’s a gun. And there are certain images or words, I can’t determine if that’s playful or real. And until I can get to an investigation, I have to look into it, those students have to be removed.

I’m here for all students. And at the end of the day, and I’ve said it time and time again, parents will forgive us for certain things. They’re not going to forgive us if their kid doesn’t come home. They’re just not. And it’s difficult to even think about it, but it happened 10 minutes up the street almost.

I cannot just turn my head and act as if, well, I think it may have been playful and take the chance that something happens. I can’t take a chance.”

Some of the students were so uncomfortable with the Instagram photo that they stayed home from school, Fussnecker said. How the school found out about the photo has not been revealed, but it seems likely that some of the students who were afraid reported it.

Fussnecker met with the Bowlins on Friday afternoon, the suspension was revoked, and the boy was allowed to return to school today without penalty.

“He was a very reasonable man, and they seemed to see it our way,” Mr. Bowlin said.

The student who posted the photo remains on suspension, and his family is reportedly meeting with school officials this week.

After 8 years of Obamanation, America has gone absolutely mad. They demonstrate on a daily basis that most of the population have become mental cases beyond repair.

I cannot find the words to express my shock and dismay!! Doesn’t anyone use common sense anymore?
I agree Frank–the administrators deserve to be stabbed in the eye, but wait until the pencil is converted and is fully automatic!

    • I assume that you know that you just made a terroristic threat?

      • Glenn Festog

Considering the fact that American medical personnel kill 100k+ people a year, suggesting that people seek professional help would also qualify as a “terrorist threat”.

After all, “looking at me funny” calls for armed response by police, while their “puppycide” campaign remains the core of their “hearts and minds” program (which describes TARGETS if you’ve been paying attention).

the madness in our school administrators is a symptom of the real problem.

        • But medical personnel have licenses to practice medical. The problem is that they never get it right:-) Seriously, most of the killing done by medicos is done in ignorance, because that is the primary thing installed in medical schools. I am currently training to become a medical transcription editor and I daily see something that makes me glad I didn’t go onto be a doctor like my RN mother wanted. This will be my third career and likely the most intellectually challenging, given that my first two were broadcast engineering (replacing blown fuses and fixing what predecessors messed up) and truck driving (dodging drivers that shouldn’t be allowed on the street as pedestrians).

          • Glenn Festog

Ignorance sometimes, arrogance in others; in the case of my family I found that many doctors do not possess the ability to read a case file. This was determined through multiple events where my mother would enter the hospital for treatment and be prescribed various new medications WITHOUT checking for current medication interference. After 6 months of misdiagnosis (a artery ruptured in her leg during a long flight), including CHEMO treatment, a check on my own revealed 5 new drugs (prescribed by three different doctors) that specifically stated (drug info sheet) to not take same with her current meds.

The only thing worse was the “deer in the headlights look” I got when showing these Docs their errors. Medicine is supposed to be science based, but too much of it requires faith for me to be comfortable with; priests in white lab coats. Ha!

          • Given that modern for profit medicine gives the average GP about 6 or 7 minutes per patient, and it takes at least that long to simply read most charts, there is little time for understanding and comprehension. I am a patient in a non-profit volunteer clinic staffed by volunteer doctors, nurses, and pharmacists, and I have never been rushed.
I am training to be a medical transcription editor and there is no way that I could begin to do anything with a file in 6 or 7 minutes, given that the job I’m training for is the final vetting of all medical documents before they go in the cache. You have to understand that what AMA-FDA types consider to be science-based has little to do with data and is simply the application of scientific method to the obfuscation of and distraction from the objective rather than the appropriate analysis thereof.

Oh no, I just liked these comments. Black suv’s will be following me around now.

  • I’d contact the school to determine what would insure the expulsion and do it. They can’t call him a truant when they’ve thrown him out, and he’d probably make a pretty good homeschooler.

He walked the Earth and is the very essence of what is holding together this dimension. I was formerly convinced it was all bs. Seek and you will find, I did. It can’t hurt to try a prayer of seeking.

          • I gave up praying to a non-existent deity a long time ago.  I never got an answer in 35 years, so I assumed that one was not forthcoming. I call myself a Christian atheist because although I have zero doubt that Jesus walked the earth, he clearly had nothing to do with setting up a church that even the bible says we are in whenever we come together in his name.  I haven’t found a contemporary church that does.

Sorry I don’t use this email much anymore. He likes persistence, perhaps try and find a church where the spirit really is, not these dead mega churches, Lutheran or Catholic ones.
Here’s my story: I was into astral projection and hidden knowledge. I was seeking answers to previous experiences I have had with the paranormal and seeing UFOs with others. Everything I researched had me convinced the Bible was just a means of control.

I later married a Christian women and after getting drug around to church for awhile thinking everyone were brainwashed sheep I simply said the following skeptical yet sincere prayer “Jesus, if you really are who you say you are, of course I would serve you, just show me something.”

So one day my wife was pulling out for church, me mocking and scoffing, I pulled out heading the other direction, cruising along listening to some satanic death metal, and suddenly this flood of information hits me. I knew Jesus was Lord as sure as if He was sitting in the passenger seat, saw all the times He saved me from my reckless thrill seeking nihilistic lifestyle, felt this overwhelming sense of guilt, heart racing.

I stopped in a rural area and got out and knelt and just uttered “make me new” and I will never forget the most powerful feeling of love just embrace, engulf and permeate me. I just broke down wondering how He could love me so much despite me going around telling people it was all a lie. I found out my wife was praying for me at the same time. I felt so different to the point of gazing in the mirror wondering why. Turns out this is the classic born again experience. I then came under spiritual attack as many do who were formerly involved in occult practices. Demons flee at the mention of His name and sleep paralysis stops instantly.

          • The literature from those who have experienced near-death is far more enlightening than all of the theologians’ yammer about a deity that I have never found evidence of. That said, I call myself a Christian atheist, because that is something in existence that can be called Christ consciousness, and I have experienced enough of it to know that it exists. I do not believe in the superstitious theology of the bible, but I know that the consciousness is pervasive and is composed of bright white love.

          • Ivan Sanchez

Christ consciousness is new age babble I used to sound like. Christ walked the earth, is is recorded and the books were written when the people and witnesses were still alive. Archeology is constantly finding new sites that were thought to be myth and the Bible speaks of not to mention hundreds of fulfilled prophesies that are provably older than the fulfillment.. The Bible was written by 40 different authors, over 1500 years in three continents in three languages and yet forms a cohesive multilayered whole. Try getting roomful of people to agree on something.

          • Saying Christ had (and has) no consciousness indicates that he was an automaton. Is that what you mean?

          • Ivan Sanchez

I was obviously referring to the term and not Jesus. What I’m trying to get at is that people try to say Jesus was just a great teacher who had this “Christ consciousness” like Buddha and other teachers. Here is an excellent video: Age of Deceit

          • Christ consciousness was never manifested in teaching because all followers were expected to teach, not to perform miracles. Buddha, among other teachers, never claimed or demonstrated any supernatural powers. Jesus didn’t make a big deal about his abilities, it was those who saw them that did. He also never claimed to be the only one who had them. I’m not going to watch 2 and half hours of the reason I gave up religious belief to find out why this is an excellent video.

Parents need to realize, they can call child services/welfare/DYFUS on schools that abuse their power and bully and terrorize the children in their care.

Parents, make sure children understand that school computers, and WIFI provide zero privacy. A simple search or post made at school, even on your own device, can land you in a world of trouble.

The schools have become the new Hitler Nazi youth program for the globalists, and they are at war with the American people.

  • BillyBob Sowbreath

WHAT THREAT? This crap has gone WAY too far. If the parents don’t pull thier kid out of that insane asylum, then they are just as nuts as the school admins themselves.
Putting your kid in public schools these days is akin to child abuse!

And once again a perfect example of why you DON’T use social media of any kind!
It is almost certain to come back and bite you in the ass, especially our youngsters. Post questionable crap on social media now and it WILL cause problems for that child at some point in the future. And NONE of it ever gets erased or purged. Not anymore!
Once it’s on the net.. it STAYS on the net!

I am so glad my kids are out of school now!
Parents: stand up to this tyranny or you’ll forever be railroaded with BS like this poor kid has to go through.

    • klaus Barbie

All this bullshit that these kids are going through will continue to happen to them after they are out of school and for the rest of their lives because they have been conditioned to accept it.

UPDATE: 5/9/17 – The suspension has been rescinded after consideration by the school administrators. The backlash by the local community, I think, had A LOT to do with this, too.

    • klaus Barbie

If a burglar broke into your house and stole your big screen TV. Then he brought it back a week later after consideration because of the backlash from the community. Would this make it ok? Fuck no! Sue those cocksuckers at that school until their assholes are bleeding.

So if you’d like the real gun he would’ve been expelled?

My other biggest thing was The person patting him down at school administrator? Is that person better have the power of peace officer or a police officer to do that.

They should have a very good reason to suspect him of caring a weapon and had a police officer do the search. I smell a lawsuit.

So what someone at the school watching Instagram or was this one of the leftist students felt threatened.

  • OldPoorRichard

I wish parents would sue schools for incidents like this. I pledge that I will if my daughter is ever disciplined for innocent activity like “liking” a picture of a gun. Even if there’s no chance of winning, I will work diligently to spend as little of my own money as possible on my attorney’s fees while causing disruption for school officials and costs for city attorneys.

    • klaus Barbie

Take your children out of these mental institutions and home school them. Its not that hard to do. They will actually become better educated than the one who teaches them unless you were home schooled too.
