Silly Students, Don’t You Know That in America, a Mexican Holiday Takes Precedence Over Patriotism?

Maybe the flame under the melting pot is burning so hot that our own national identity has…I don’t know...melted?

In Northern California last year, students wearing t-shirts bearing an American flag were asked to turn them inside out. Wait a second…Northern California is still in America, right? Yeah, that’s what I thought.

Anyhow, these American kids had the utter audacity to wear a shirt proclaiming their American-ness on May 5, otherwise known as Cinco de Mayo. Cinco de Mayo…that’s not American, is it? Oh – nope, it’s Mexican.

So, in order to keep from ticking off the Mexican kids at the American school celebrating a Mexican holiday, the American kids had to hide the symbol of their own culture they had opted to wear, a flag of the country that the Mexican kids were celebrating the Mexican holiday in. Did you get all of that?

The 9th Circuit Court of Appeals upheld the school’s decision to have the kids turn their shirts inside out to keep from making the Mexican kids mad.

The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals said the officials’ concerns of racial violence outweighed students’ freedom of expression rights. Administrators feared the American-flag shirts would enflame the passions of Latino students celebrating the Mexican holiday. Live Oak High School, in the San Jose suburb of Morgan Hill, had a history of problems between white and Latino students on that day.

The unanimous three-judge panel said past problems gave school officials sufficient and justifiable reasons for their actions. The court said schools have wide latitude in curbing certain civil rights to ensure campus safety.

“Our role is not to second-guess the decision to have a Cinco de Mayo celebration or the precautions put in place to avoid violence,” Judge M. Margaret McKeown wrote for the panel. The past events “made it reasonable for school officials to proceed as though the threat of a potentially violent disturbance was real,” she wrote. (source)

Just to be sure we all understand this clearly, let me break it down, point by point.

  • American kids wore American shirts…in America
  • Mexican kids celebrated a Mexican holiday…in America
  • American kids being American might make Mexican kids mad…
  • So Mexican kids get to be Mexican in America…
  • But American kids can’t be American in America…
  • Because Mexican kids might uncontrollably become “enflamed” and start a fight.

In what world does this possibly make sense? How can people be expected to embrace diversity when that diversity is celebrated at the expense of our own heritage and national identity? If a holiday that celebrates the Mexican Army defeating the French in Mexico can be tolerated by the American kids, shouldn’t the Mexican kids be required to behave themselves and not attempt to beat the tar out of the American kids for wearing a t-shirt proclaiming their own heritage?

We have become nothing more than an idiocracy of political correctness run horribly amok.

Hey, California! If you’re attempting to teach acceptance of other cultures: YOU’RE DOING IT WRONG!

Just another example of the courts abdicating their responsibility and allowing “administrative” over riding of our rights.

Absolutely right, Mr. P. Who elected these school officials?
I had my class in high school memorize all 4 verses of the Star Spangled Banner. The hispanics refused; I told them they had the right to fail for this was America, you know, where our rights abound.

Agree; also responsible savvy parents home school/tudor or send kids to Christian school. Loser parents send kids to gov schools, simple as that.

They should be happy when America and Mexico are one, but they can no longer afford to travel. I hope they enjoy the memories by telling their guards about the fun they had in their youth.

Okay…so they asked the flag waivers to turn their shirts inside out so that they would appear to be less confrontational while involved in circumstances that school officials should have headed off at the pass.
They could have done that by telling the Mexican kids that if they want to celebrate a past, failed Revolution in a country that their parents fled due to the lack of opportunities. What? No one might have seen such a response as inherently, uhm…educational? The truth is something every child should learn as soon as possible.
    Things like:
Mexico is a mess and always has been.
Equating your personal sense of worth with any nationality is ridiculous.
Putting “culture” ahead of reason in a free society is counter to progress.
Invidual Freedom and liberty work just fine with NO flag.
AND finally: Accordian music is ANNOYING– think it was the Polka that drove my family out of Germany.
If you fry your beans right the first time–re-frying is just excessive. I live in New Mexico where we have perfected the art of the “single fry method”.
    You know…some BASICS.
I think the Head Commie in charge over there is seriously remiss in impeding the learning of the group that keeps them in their well-paid, tenured jobs. I mean, if they don’t get busy and teach these Mexicans some critical thinking–and soon–they may find themselves living under a Mexican flag and fleeing California due to the lack of opportunities. Karma is a bitch like that. The SARC lamp is lit.
Oh…and tell the butt hurt American kids this:
Look at these misguided interlopers, say nothing, cock an “oh my God, what a backwards, sad little misinformed people you Mexicans are” eyebrow at at them and walk away shaking your head….
….then go and FIGHT all coercive taxes across the board. As their reasons for coming here with any thing other than for the same pursuit of happiness enjoyed equally by all mind begin to diminish, your reasons for really being angry at them may subside as well. Teach them that true freedom is respectful and does not impede or infringe on of the freedom of others. True acceptance comes from mutual respect. Cultures are built by people cooperating on a theme that works. Liberty and respect are some of our successful themes here in the US of A. This sort of stuff is taught by example and backed by assertive personal and politcal behavior–that is how we re-shift the paradigm.
The Message: They are as free as you to pursue their happiness–right up to where it impedes yours or anyone elses. Do something a bit more meaningful than donning a t-shirt and “hoping for the best”.
As for all the other butt-hurt whining I see on this site regarding our “inability to be Americans any more” and “the the general…they, they legislators..bla bla, them did this shite”. For Gods sake, call yourself a Wam-bulance. America ain’t over until we and our progeny who believe and WILL FIGHT FOR HER are all stone cold dead.

So until that happens, I must respectfully, seriously ask you: what are you DOING about it other than grousing? Are you politically active–are you personally fighting and encouraging others to protect the values that made this country great? Are you advocating for the morals and principles–that once made us the envy of nations–daily in your conversations?
I don’t post to these sites often and I see what is great about this country flying out of our grasp but I will never stop fighting for her. For those fighting too: May God bless, keep you and give you all the strength you need.
    Apologies for the excessive post.

If Mexico is so great, why are they here? Use to tell the Canadians I worked with the same thing when they bad mouthed our lack of ff’d up socialized health care

Well, if they don’t like looking at Tshirts with the US flag on them, then let them look at something else instead… while keeping their hands and their tempers to themselves.

Or go to jail. Culture be damned.

if i lived in california, i would tell my son (or daughter) that i would support their decision to push this to the limit. in other words he or she would not face any consequences at home for getting suspended from school or arrested for wearing an American flag t shirt. our young people need all the encouragement we can give them to fight this pc bs every chance we get. who cares if the mexicans get their panties in a wad?
